DESCRIPTION:February 18 19\, & 20\, 2022 \nFriday at 7:30 pm\, Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm \nSunday\, February 20th are SOLD OUT! \nPresented by Opera Southwest and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, Frida is a lively celebration of one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century. Based on the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo\, it is a fully staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Spanish with both Spanish and English translation supertitles\, and presented in two acts with one intermission. The music of composer Robert Xavier Rodriguez bridges the gap between opera and music theatre\, drawing inspiration from Gershwin\, Sondheim\, and Kurt Weill; the libretto is by Hilary Blecher and Migdalia Cruz. \n$21\, $41\, $62\, $83\, $103 with discounts for groups of 8 or more\, anyone 30 years old or younger\, and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \n \nFrida Kahlo painted 55 self-portraits\, each one offering us a revealing look at the artist at a single point in her life. Similarly\, the opera is episodic\, and captures the most poignant moments from her life\, from her fateful traffic accident at the age of 18 to her political development and her turbulent relationships with Diego Rivera and her sister Cristina. \nRobert Xavier Rodriguez’ Frida is a fully staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Spanish with both Spanish and English translation supertitles.  Presented in two acts with one intermission. \nPresented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, Frida is based on the life and work of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. \nCOVID PROTOCOLS:\nThe Opera Southwest respectfully requests visitors to wear masks during the performance.  Proof of vaccination is required for the performance.

When a Spanish geologist arrives to survey the land for the local patrón and see if it can be dammed for hydroelectric power—a threat to the locals’ way of life—his cynicism thaws as he comes to understand the ethics of his new neighbors. \n1992; Spanish with English subtitles; 127 minutes; rated PG. \nFree community event \n \nThe Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences annually awards a special prize\, the Honorary Goya\, to artists whose body of work is of the highest value and relevance. In 1922\, this “Goya de Honor” goes to José Sacristán\, one of the most renowned and beloved actors in Spanish cinema. \nIn February\, Instituto Cervantes joins in the tribute to this multifaceted performer\, whose career encompasses over one hundred films\, in addition to stage and television performances\, and who has also directed three feature films and several plays.
