Each gathering in this series will focus on a different cultural aspect of the question: “Who or what is Latinidad?” Voces de Latinidad aims to feature unique voices from our community culminating in a short documentary and digital archive celebrating the rich diversity of our lived experiences. \nOn July 8\, we invite all people of Hispanic\, Latina/o/e/x\, Chicana/o/e/x\, Indigenous\, and New Mexican heritage from the communities of Barelas\, Atrisco\, the greater South Valley\, and surrounding neighborhoods to come and share how you identify culturally and how this shapes your reality and lived experiences. \nFree Community Event. Please register using the link below. \n \nSpeaker: A native of the Dominican Republic\, Loida Maritza Pérez is an independent scholar\, cultural activist and author of Geographies of Home\, a novel published in the United States and abroad. Her upcoming book\, Beyond the Pale\, won a PEN America 2019 Jean Stein Grant for Literary Oral History. Her work has appeared in the Michigan Quarterly Review\, Latina\, MaComere\, Meridians\, Edinburgh Review\, Bomb\, Callaloo and Best of Callaloo. \n*Note: Community Sessions will be filmed and some individuals may be selected for interviews.  \nThe Voces de Latinidad project has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Democracy Demands Wisdom.

SISTER DOULA is the story of Hakima Payne\, a nurse in Kansas City who tackles this crisis head-on\, fighting to save Black babies by offering alternatives to the US healthcare system that surveils\, criminalizes\, and harms Black families. Mama Hakima is equal parts unapologetic truth-teller and wise-compassionate mentor. This is the story of the birth doulas she has mentored\, who advocate for Black birthing people and work toward building a future. \nFree Community Event

She is the Department Administrator for UNM’s Chicana and Chicano Studies department.
