SUMMARY:Southwest of Eden:  The Art of Adam and Eve
DESCRIPTION:This exciting exhibit features approximately fifty works of art from the Joyce Kaser Collection. Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve examines the various ways in which New Mexican artists and others visually portray these two famous figures as well as the flora and fauna in their surroundings.  For example\, how many apples are featured\, or are they pomegranates? Is the serpent male or female? Is it animal or human\, or half and half? Is Eve always the instigator or is Adam assuming some responsibility? Situated in the NHCC Art Museum’s highly popular community gallery\, Southwest of Eden invites the visitor to take a closer look at the imagery\, symbolism and story of what happened in the garden.

SUMMARY:El Perú: Art in the Contemporary Past
DESCRIPTION:El Perú: Art in the Contemporary Past\, aims to break down stereotypes of what visitors expect to see in a “Peruvian art exhibit.”  The exhibit celebrates the work of  artists Baldomero Alejos (1924-1976) a photographer from Ayacucho; Ana de Orbegoso\, a multimedia artist inspired by the Cuzco School\, Pre-Colombian pottery and Peruvian history and identity; Kukuli Velarde\, a ceramicist who addresses class racism\, and exclusion  in her ceramics\, and Lorry Salcedo\, a photographer whose striking black and white images connect the Peruvian past to its present.   Each artist explores the Peruvian pre-colonial and colonial past while addressing race\, class and inclusion in the contemporary present.  Works include photography\, sculpture\, ceramics\, painting\, and multimedia in juxtaposition with examples of their historical antecedents.

SUMMARY:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era
DESCRIPTION:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era\, is an online exhibit of artwork created by Albuquerque High School students under the direction of four teachers. The work was created at the end of the spring semester\, after schools closed across New Mexico in response to the COVID-19 crisis. \n \nPrior to school closures and the closure of the NHCC campus\, the AHS students and teachers were scheduled to hang an exhibit in the Pete Domenici Education Building on the NHCC. The students were working on completely different projects at that time and what you see here reflects their transition into online art instruction and the students’ reflections on this dramatic and sudden shift. Many artworks were submitted for this online exhibit and what is presented here is just a small sampling of the creativity that has taken place since March.\, \nDuring this time\, the teachers focused intently on how to continue supporting their students through these new challenges. There were many emotions about how the school year ended so abruptly and about the continued need for social distancing. Yet\, something magical also happened. The students created so much artwork in their homes that it needed to be shared and shown to others. The artwork demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity that is inspiring. There was so much artwork\, that we were only able to show a portion of it. \nIMPORTANT message to all the students!  All of the art created\, whether shown here or not\, is amazing! Please\, don’t stop creating. You are teaching the rest of the world about resilience and resourcefulness. \nTo all the teachers\, thank you! You all have been challenged in many ways. Your dedication to your students is evident in the honesty of your statements and the varied projects shown. You have not only taught craftsmanship but life skills. Through the lengthy and complicated process of transitioning to an online exhibit\, it is evident that your capacity for care and hard work is unwavering. This piece is part of our permanent collection funded through the Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts\, a division fo the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. \nIn 2017\, during our family art making summer program\, participants were inspired by Luis’ painted Cadillac and created their own designs for artistic cars. DESCRIPTION:9:30 am (MTS)\nA virtual first day of issue ceremony held on the Postal Service’s Facebook and Twitter pages:\nusps.com/guapulo\, facebook.com/USPS\, and twitter.com/USPS \nThe United States Postal Service is partnering with the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) on the release of the Our Lady of Guápulo Christmas forever stamp. \nThe event will include remarks from Postal Service Vice President for Retail and Post Office Operations Angela Curtis and NHCC Art Museum and Visual Arts Program Director and Chief Curator Dr. Tey Marianna Nunn\, and entertainment will be provided by NHCC History and Literary Arts Program Director Valerie Martinez and the Harlem School of the Arts. \n \nDesigned by Greg Breeding\, the stamp features a detail of “Our Lady of Guápulo\,” an 18th-century oil painting by an unknown artist in Cuzco\, Peru\, from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Enrobed in a pyramidal gown speckled with jewels and holding a scepter woven with roses and leaves\, a crowned Virgin Mary looks down at a similarly adorned Christ child in her left arm. A red rosary ropes across the center of her dress and down to her right. \nBetween the 16th and 18th centuries\, European painters worked with indigenous artists in and around Cuzco. The Europeans trained local artists in styles and forms that dominated their home countries at the end of the Renaissance period and during the Baroque era. \nOur Lady of Guápulo is a local variant of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Extremadura\, Spain. The image venerated as Our Lady of Guápulo originated as a sculpture\, commissioned in Quito\, Ecuador\, in 1584 and transferred to a chapel in the nearby village of Guápulo in 1587.

DESCRIPTION:The Bosque Gallery at the NHCC Is an outdoor exhibition space opening on October 23. The open-air gallery will consist of 31 panels measuring 48 inches by 60 inches each\, mounted on 730 feet of fencing along the western border of the NHCC campus\, facing the Paseo del Bosque Trail. \nIn celebration of the NHCC’s 20th anniversary\, the first exhibition presented along the open-air Bosque Gallery will be ¡Mira! Nuestra Arquitectura: An Architectural Journey\, an architectural history of NHCC’s past\, present\, and future. \nExhibitions at Bosque Gallery will rotate among the key program areas of the NHCC – History and Literary Arts\, Visual Arts\, and Performing Arts – and will include topics that support the Center’s mission to preserve\, promote\, and advance Hispanic culture\, arts\, and humanities. Inspiration for Bosque Gallery comes from Las Rejas de Chapultepec in Chapultepec Park in Mexico City. \nFor more information on the ¡Mira!
