She made that dream a reality in 2010 when she created Futuro Media\, an independent\, nonprofit newsroom based in Harlem\, NYC with the mission to create multimedia content from a POC perspective. \nPlease join us for a special evening celebrating International Woman’s Day when Hinojosa will share her experiences and discuss the importance of sharing our stories as Hispanics and Latinos. The award-winning author will be reading from her collection of short stories and essays\, Crimes of the Tongue. \nFree Community Event\, generously supported by AARP New Mexico. Please register here or call the NHCC Welcome Center at 505-724-4771 for assistance. \n \n \n \nAlicia Gaspar De Alba is a Professor of Chicana/o and Central American studies\, English\, and gender studies at UCLA\, where she has worked since 1994. She has published 12 books\, including novels\, collections of fiction and poetry\, and academic books. Her 13th book is coming out later this spring. She has won several awards for her writing\, including the Lambda Literary Foundation Award for Best Lesbian Mystery in 2005 for Desert Blood\, which also won the Latino Book Award for Best Mystery in English in 2006 and Best Mystery in Spanish in 2009. Her first novel\, Sor Juana’s Second Dream\, won the Latino Hall of Fame Award for Best Historical Novel in 2000. Her forthcoming book\, Crimes of the Tongue: Essays and Stories\, will be published by Arte Publico Press. On Saturday\, she will be offering an oral storytelling workshop based on techniques from The Moth\, which she teaches in her bilingual creative writing class\, The Mariposa Hour.

She is a Larry Neal Poetry Award winner and a Virginia Center for the Creative Arts fellow. \nire’ne lara silva is the author of four poetry books among other publications\, and the recipient of a NALAC grant\, the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Award\, and the Texas Institute of Letters Shrake Award for Best Short Nonfiction\, among other accolades. \njo reyes-boitel l is a poet and playwright whose hybrid opera was chosen as a finalist for Guerilla Opera’s 2022 annual virtual festival. Along with their two books\, their work has appeared in numerous publications. \nAngelina Sáenz is an award-winning author and poet whose debut book of poetry was recently published. Her poems have been published in many journals and she is a Macondo Writer’s Workshop Fellow. \nJen Yáñez-Alaniz is a poet\, scholar\, educator\, activist\, and Pushcart Prize nominee for her poetry. She is currently working on a critical biography of Carmen Tafolla and her poems have appeared in a variety of publications.

Her interdisciplinary work also focuses on heritage language pedagogy and its intersections with bilingual education. Blea shares frequent conversations with award-winning author\, Rudolfo Anaya\, who died in 2020. They were friends for over forty years\, shared working on the University of New Mexico campus\, and lived near one another. Anaya is best known for his book\, Bless Me\, Ultima. In this volume\, Dr. Blea recalls platicas\, conversations\, with her friend\, Rudy\, about the essence of his writing\, growing up in New Mexico\, the nature of university life\, the art and business of writing\, publishing\, death\, dying\, and spirituality.
