Make Something!: Visit the Museum….and at home…make something!

Today we are inspired by “A Slice of American Pie,” by artist Luis Eligio Tapia. This piece is part of our permanent collection funded through the Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts, a division fo the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. In 2017, during our family art making summer program, participants were inspired by Luis’ painted Cadillac and created their own designs for artistic cars. Día de los Muertos: Lesson Plans

Día de los Muertos is observed on November 1st and 2nd in many countries across Latin American. The celebration is the result of a blending of Catholic Spanish traditions with Indigenous customs and beliefs. It is believed that on Día de los Muertos the veil between the spirit world and real world is lifted long enough for the souls of the deceased to reunite with their families and friends. Colcha Community Stitch-Along

1 pm Live via Zoom Our Colcha Community Workshop is going virtual until we are able to meet in person, and is open to anyone wherever they may reside. This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award winning artist, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. Celebrating Traditions

Christmas Day is usually filled with get togethers with family and friends and if you are in New Mexico attending dances at one of the Pueblos. Holiday celebrations represent rich cultural and artistic traditions. We thought we would bring a little bit of the museum to you, the objects represented are integral to holiday festivities. Art Making: Día de los Reyes Crown 

Celebrate Día de los Reyes (Three Kings' Day), with a crown! Día de los Reyes, also known as the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6th across Latin America, in Spain, and by Latinx communities around the world. This feast day commemorates the visitation of the Santo Niño (Infant Jesus) by the three wise men and, for some, marks the end of the Christmas season. Querencia Writing Workshop

6 pm (MTS) Live via Zoom 10 registered writers reading from our Querenica Writing Workshop will be working through out January 2020 creating poetry, fiction and nonfiction inspired by the theme of “querencia” and the anthology, Querencia: Reflections on the New Mexico Homeland, edited by Levi Romero, Vanessa Fonseca-Chavez and Spencer Herrera (UNM Press 2020). The workshop will culminate in a public reading on February 20, 2021.
