SUMMARY:Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications
DESCRIPTION:Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing\, creating art\, writing\, learning from guest artists\, writing\,  sharing\, writing\, collaborating\, writing\, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. The program runs each weekend day in June from 9:30 am- 4 pm with a free lunch included. DESCRIPTION:10:30 am to 12:30 pm \nResidents of Barelas are invited to a series of workshops that will result in a trilogy of plays about the neighborhood. The dates are March 9\, 16\, 23 and 30.  Do you have stories\, images\, characters or incidents about the neighborhood that you’d like to see in a play? In this series of four sessions we will play with words and techniques that reveal our stories and our styles. The workshops will culminate with a public sharing of stories\, anecdotes and scenes at the NHCC.  Workshops will be led by Barelas residents/playwrights Leonard Madrid\, Raúl Garza and Mónica Sánchez. Presented by the NHCC in partnership with Artful Life.   Register here. \nRaul Garza is a playwright who tells stories that resound with culture identity and sense of place. His full-length play Fantasmaville received the National Latino Playwriting Award. When not writing\, Raul explores kundalini yoga\, devours pop culture\, and travels beyond his means. \nLeonard Madrid is an Albuquerque area theatre maker. He has been awarded the Kennedy Center’s Latinx award for playwriting three times. \nMónica Sánchez has followed her bliss towards a life in the theatre and the theatre of life. DESCRIPTION:6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork\, partner skills and choreography. SUMMARY:Revolutions International Theatre Festival: Where Did We Sit On The Bus?
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 27\, 2019\nFriday\, March 29\, 2019\n7 pm on Wednesday & 8 pm on Friday \nProduced by Tricklock Company\, the Revolutions International Theatre Festival welcomes performance companies from all over the globe to perform and connect across cultures and communities. For the 19th annual festival\, Tricklock and the NHCC present Where Did We Sit On The Bus?. \nWhere Did We Sit on the Bus? is an electric one-man show pulsing with Latin rhythms\, rap\, hip-hop\, spoken word\, and live looping. During a third grade lesson on the Civil Rights movement and Rosa Parks\, a Latino boy raises his hand to ask\, “Where did we sit on the bus?” and his teacher can’t answer the question. DESCRIPTION:The NHCC’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts has postponed the March 28th film screening until further notice. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. \n6 pm \n \nPlease note that a pre-screening conversation about the film\, led by Dr. Elizabeth Hutchison\, will begin at this time. The film will be shown at 7 pm \nRaquel has worked as a live-in\, uniformed maid for a well-to-do family in Santiago\, Chile for over 20 years. Now 41\, she is part of the family in some ways\, as emotional attachments—both positive and negative—attest\, but in others remains apart\, even expendable. \nWhen her employers decide that she needs help and hire an additional maid\, Raquel feels that she must fight for her place in the household. Her “guerrilla war” against a series of newcomers reaches increasingly audacious heights\, until someone quite different turns up and Raquel’s world begins\, very gently\, to expand. La Nana\, described as a “microcosm of Latin social hierarchy\,” also focuses on one woman’s journey to free herself from a mental servitude of her own making. Presented in partnership with Women’s International Study Center (WISC) as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. Dr. Elizabeth Hutchison\, WISC Fellow-in-Residence\, will introduce the film and lead a discussion with representatives of other community organizations\, beginning at 6 PM\, prior to the screening. SUMMARY:Barelas Stories: Four Workshops
DESCRIPTION:10:30 am to 12:30 pm \nResidents of Barelas are invited to a series of workshops that will result in a trilogy of plays about the neighborhood. The dates are March 9\, 16\, 23 and 30.  Do you have stories\, images\, characters or incidents about the neighborhood that you’d like to see in a play? In this series of four sessions we will play with words and techniques that reveal our stories and our styles. The workshops will culminate with a public sharing of stories\, anecdotes and scenes at the NHCC.  Workshops will be led by Barelas residents/playwrights Leonard Madrid\, Raúl Garza and Mónica Sánchez. Presented by the NHCC in partnership with Artful Life.   Register here. \nRaul Garza is a playwright who tells stories that resound with culture identity and sense of place. His full-length play Fantasmaville received the National Latino Playwriting Award. When not writing\, Raul explores kundalini yoga\, devours pop culture\, and travels beyond his means. \nLeonard Madrid is an Albuquerque area theatre maker. He has been awarded the Kennedy Center’s Latinx award for playwriting three times. \nMónica Sánchez has followed her bliss towards a life in the theatre and the theatre of life. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.
