SUMMARY:Southwest of Eden:  The Art of Adam and Eve
DESCRIPTION:This exciting exhibit features approximately fifty works of art from the Joyce Kaser Collection. Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve examines the various ways in which New Mexican artists and others visually portray these two famous figures as well as the flora and fauna in their surroundings.  For example\, how many apples are featured\, or are they pomegranates? Is the serpent male or female? Is it animal or human\, or half and half? Is Eve always the instigator or is Adam assuming some responsibility? Situated in the NHCC Art Museum’s highly popular community gallery\, Southwest of Eden invites the visitor to take a closer look at the imagery\, symbolism and story of what happened in the garden.

DESCRIPTION:Camina el Autor showcases the extraordinary work of Guaman Poma; explores the history of the indigenous people of Peru\, Andean civilization\, and Spanish conquest; and broadens our understanding of Peruvian culture and history.The digital images and accompanying texts have been provided to the NHCC by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, with assistance from the Consulate General of Peru in Denver. The NHCC has curated these (398 fullpage drawings) to present a vibrant and informative exhibit that encourages learning\, discovery\, and contemplation. DESCRIPTION:4 pm – 8 pm \nNational Hispanic Cultural Center/Paseo del Bosque Trail/CABQ BioPark and Tingley Beach \n¡ILUMINARTE! is a winter holiday celebration inspired by luminarias and farolitos—a New Mexico tradition.  This Sunday evening event includes storytelling\, an illuminated bike parade along the Paseo del Bosque Trail\, and performances by Story Riders–a bilingual after-school and bike-riding program for elementary school students—with Circo Latino\, AirDance New Mexico and Albuquerque Poet Laureate Michelle Otero. The event is free and open to the general public. \nTo participate in the Magical Light and Bike Parade\, register here: https://nhccnm.wufoo.com/forms/iluminarte-2019-parade-registration-form \n \n\nSUNDAY\, DECEMBER 8\, 2019  \n3:30 pm. NHCC Plaza.  CABQ Esperanza  FREE bike clinic and valet.  Get your bikes checked and ready for the parade. This is a great time to light yourself and your bike up\, before the parade begins. \n4:30 pm:  Performance/NHCC Plaza.  AirDance New Mexico performance: luminarias cast flickering light that dances across the wintery darkness\, promoting warmth\, guidance\, and community.  AirDance explores these themes through the lens of aerial dance. Free\, no tickets required. \n5 pm Illuminated Bike Parade. The  ¡ILUMINARTE! cyclists\, let by Circo Latino and Story Rider students from Dolores Gonzales\, Reginald Chavez and Valle Vista Elementary Schools\, and the general public proceed on illuminated bikes from NHCC plaza to the luminaria-lit Paseo del Bosque Trail. Cyclists ride to the rear entrance to the BioPark “River of Lights.” If you plan to ride in the parade\, make sure you register.  The parade is free and open to the public. \n5:30 pm. Cyclists park their bikes with a free valet and then can wander the “River of Lights” during Magic Hour.  Be sure you buy a ticket for entrance to the Botanical Gardens/ROL ahead of time. \n6 pm: Performance/ABQ BioPark-River of Lights. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4\,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. \nThe digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a sharing and learning experience for students and families anywhere. Over fifty classically-trained dancers will once again inspire audiences in the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Albuquerque Journal Theater with a collection of moving and inspirational classical ballet\, jazz and contemporary dance performances choreographed to traditional and contemporary Christmas music. \n$22\, $33 w/ $3 discount for students\, seniors and NHCC members \n \nA moving and uplifting production\, Christmas Joy has become an Albuquerque holiday tradition. DESCRIPTION:7 pm—Friday\, Saturday & Sunday\n2 pm—Saturday & Sunday \nFestival Ballet Albuquerque is partnering with the National Hispanic Cultural Center to present an original production\, The Nutcracker in the Land of Enchantment. The beloved holiday classic is transported to territorial New Mexico in the late 1800s. Resplendent in its classical origins\, this unique southwestern version adds elements of the state’s heritage and traditions including Spanish dancers\, southwestern snakes\, sheep and shepherdesses\, a lively fandango\, a Cochiti Pueblo Storyteller doll with children complete with Roadrunner and Coyote characters! A special treat are the lavish western Victorian-era costumes.
