SUMMARY:Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve
DESCRIPTION:This exciting exhibit features approximately fifty works of art from the Joyce Kaser Collection. Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve examines the various ways in which New Mexican artists and others visually portray these two famous figures as well as the flora and fauna in their surroundings.  For example\, how many apples are featured\, or are they pomegranates? Is the serpent male or female? Is it animal or human\, or half and half? Is Eve always the instigator or is Adam assuming some responsibility? Situated in the NHCC Art Museum’s highly popular community gallery\, Southwest of Eden invites the visitor to take a closer look at the imagery\, symbolism and story of what happened in the garden.

SUMMARY:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era
DESCRIPTION:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era\, is an online exhibit of artwork created by Albuquerque High School students under the direction of four teachers. The work was created at the end of the spring semester\, after schools closed across New Mexico in response to the COVID-19 crisis. \n \nPrior to school closures and the closure of the NHCC campus\, the AHS students and teachers were scheduled to hang an exhibit in the Pete Domenici Education Building on the NHCC. The students were working on completely different projects at that time and what you see here reflects their transition into online art instruction and the students’ reflections on this dramatic and sudden shift. Many artworks were submitted for this online exhibit and what is presented here is just a small sampling of the creativity that has taken place since March.\, \nDuring this time\, the teachers focused intently on how to continue supporting their students through these new challenges. There were many emotions about how the school year ended so abruptly and about the continued need for social distancing. Yet\, something magical also happened. The students created so much artwork in their homes that it needed to be shared and shown to others. The artwork demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity that is inspiring. There was so much artwork\, that we were only able to show a portion of it. \nIMPORTANT message to all the students!  All of the art created\, whether shown here or not\, is amazing! Please\, don’t stop creating. You are teaching the rest of the world about resilience and resourcefulness. \nTo all the teachers\, thank you! You all have been challenged in many ways. Your dedication to your students is evident in the honesty of your statements and the varied projects shown. You have not only taught craftsmanship but life skills. Through the lengthy and complicated process of transitioning to an online exhibit\, it is evident that your capacity for care and hard work is unwavering. Again\, thank you. \nPlease click HERE and leave a comment for Teachers\, Artists or NHCC staff\, about this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Virtual Screening & Discussion: Con Alma
DESCRIPTION:7 pm (MST)\nThis event can be viewed AMP Concerts website HERE \nCon Alma: Exploring the Creative Process with Paola Prestini & Magos Herrera \nScreening of videos from the Con Alma project\, including a world premiere video\, La Creación de las Aves (The Creation of the Birds)\, followed by a live on-line discussion and open Q&A session with Paola Prestini and Magos Herrera\, moderated by Cristina Baccin from KUNM’s Raices program. The discussion will be hosted by the National Hispanic Cultural Center via Zoom\, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes de Albuquerque and UNM’s Latin America and Iberian Institute. Prestini and Herrera will discuss the creative process\, the social engagement\, and the creation of the virtual event. \nDonations will be accepted on the AMP Concerts webpage \n \nCon Alma is an album and live digital experience of original works by composer Paola Prestini and vocalist and composer Magos Herrera\, along with some classics from the Mexican and jazz songbook\, created and recorded remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic\, that explores the question of how we can find communion in a time of isolation. The album grew out of the personal and collective experience of this moment of deep division—be it spiritual\, ideological\, political or geographical—and seeks to use music to create a shared sense of the experiences that we are all going through together\, alone. \n“Con Alma is a sonic painting representing a 15-year friendship through a collaborative process of writing\, telling the story of shared ambitions and triumphs\, love\, trials\, hope\, and losses\,” Herrera and Prestini wrote in a joint statement about the project. “The artists we worked with form our international musical family\, and it’s a joy to be able to connect through this album\, leaving an artifact of this time\, and our response to the pandemic: alone\, but together.” \nBorn in Mexico City and now based out of New York City\, Magos Herrera presented a concert\, blending classical jazz styling with Latin melodies\, at the NHCC in 2012 as part of the Center’s signature Latin Diva Series. \nAdditional information on this project is available at https://www.conalmaproject.com. SUMMARY:Tertulia Histórica Albuquerque: UnRaveling: Pancho Villa and Sam Ravel: An Encounter During the Infamous 1916 Raid on Columbus
DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MST) \nLive Via Zoom \nRegister in advance HERE \nFor more than a century scholars have debated why Pancho Villa attacked the border town of Columbus\, New Mexico on March 9\, 1916—a deadly incursion and the only time in the 20th century that a major foreign army invaded the continental United States. For Stacey Ravel Abarbanel\, the battle is the context for a family tale so spectacular that she always wondered if it was true: when Villa raided the village he was looking to kill her grandfather\, Sam Ravel. \nFree community event \n \nAbarbanel shares how Ravel\, a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania\, landed in Columbus and became entangled in this infamous encounter during the Mexican Revolution. Her essay about delving into this history was published in Tablet Magazine and she is now adapting the story for a documentary film titled UnRaveling. \nStacey Ravel Abarbanel works with museums and other arts/cultural organizations to amplify their messages and build audiences. From 2002–2014 she was director of external affairs for the Fowler Museum at UCLA\, after ten years in arts-related publishing at Getty Publications and Architectural Digest. In addition to her consulting practice\, her writings about art\, culture\, and history have appeared in Alta\, UCLA Magazine\, and other outlets. \nAlbuquerque is presented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center in collaboration with the Office of the New Mexico State Historian.

SUMMARY:Film: Ciclo Ángela Molina\, Las cosas del querer
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (available for 48 hours) \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nJaime Chávarrri’s Las cosas del querer follows the trajectory of a song-and-dance duo and their piano player in the 1940s\, with a look into their backstage lives and an evocation of the popular music of their times. As the group’s rise to fame and fortune parallels Franco’s consolidation of power in collusion with the Spanish aristocracy\, their return to Madrid marks the most difficult  moments of their careers. Lavishly produced and vibrantly entertaining as a musical\, Las cosas del querer also addresses issues of fascism\, feminism\, and homophobia in postwar Spain. \nFree event \n \n1989; Spanish with English subtitles; 89 minutes; rated G. \nÁngela Molina’s distinguished career began in the midst of Spain’s transition to democracy\, and continues to this day. She has also appeared in numerous international films\, beginning with her appearance in Luis Buñuel’s last film\, That Obscure Object of Desire. In recognition of her brilliant career\, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded her the 2021 Goya Prize of Honor. Instituto Cervantes is pleased to present “Ciclo Ángela Molina” in homage to this extraordinary artist\, beloved for her authenticity\, her undeniable talent and her special sensibility\, and in gratitude for her outstanding contributions to Spanish cinema.
