DESCRIPTION:12 pm MST \nAvailable for 48 hours \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nLume (Fire) is one of the most recent works by Alberte Pagán\, a specialist in experimental cinema\, and part of Pagán’s “Superficies” (“Surfaces”) series\, in which the director plays with juxtaposing still photographs of natural elements with the movement of his story. SUMMARY:Film: Berlanga cumple cien años\, Esa pareja feliz
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (MST) \nAvailable for 48 hours \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nSet in Madrid in the 1950s\, Esa pareja feliz is the feature film debut by Luis García Berlanga and Juan Antonio Bardem. Underlying the 1951 comedy\, heavily influenced by Italian neorealism\, is a critical look at the incipient consumerism that was beginning to infiltrate the society of the day. A young couple\, searching for ways to improve their lot in life\, win a contest sponsored by the Florit soap company and receive the gifts and invitations awarded to the “happy couple” for 24 hours\, before they must return to their everyday reality. \nSpain; 1951; Spanish with English subtitles; 102 minutes; rated PG. \nFree community event \n \nLuis García Berlanga is one of the most renowned directors in the history of Spanish cinema. His long and fruitful film career\, his unmistakable creative hallmarks\, his corrosive humor\, and his work in directing some of the great classics of the 20th century all merit the tribute of this on-line film series\, presented on the centenary of his birth. In June\, Instituto Cervantes showcases four films that represent the trajectory of Berlanga’s career and demonstrate his evolution as a filmmaker. \nBerlanga cumple cien años: Film Schedule\nJune 4: Esa pareja feliz (Luis García Berlanga & Juan Antonio Bardem\, 1951)\nJune 11: Calabuch (Luis García Berlanga\, 1956)\nJune 18: Plácido (Luis García Berlanga\, 1961)\nJune 25: Patrimonio nacional (Luis García Berlanga\, 1981)

SUMMARY:Pioneras: Mujeres de Vanguardia/Pioneers: Women of the Avant-Garde\, Después de… Atado y bien atado
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (MST)\nAvailable for 48 hours \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nThe second part of the documentary Después de…\, by Cecilia and José Juan Bartolomé\, features politicians\, professionals\, and citizens from all walks of life as they express their opinions of the changes that have befallen Spain during the years of the country’s transition to democracy following the death of Francisco Franco. The outspokenness of some of these testimonies and the sense of tension that pervades the film caused its release to be held up until late 1983. Después de… places its directors in the vanguard of social documentarians who continue to play a critical role in Spanish cinema. \n1979-1981; Spanish with English subtitles; 90 minutes; not rated \nFree community event \n \nIn February\, the Pioneras series featured on-line talks highlighting the work of women who have paved the way in investigating new artistic languages in disciplines such as electronic music\, video creation\, or photography. This programming is now complemented by “Pioneers of Spanish Cinema\,” an on-line exhibition of films made from the 1950s through the early 1980s. Atado y bien atado (Cecilia & José Juan Bartolomé\, 1981) \nThe series is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the New Mexico Humanities Council.

SUMMARY:Film: Pioneras: Mujeres de Vanguardia/Pioneers: Women of the Avant-Garde\, El crimen de Cuenca
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (MST)\nAvailable for 48 hours \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nPilar Miró’s El crimen de Cuenca is an unsparing depiction of real events that took place in 1913 in the Spanish province of Cuenca.  When a shepherd mysteriously disappears\, his companions\, believed to be responsible for his murder\, confess to the crime under torture and are condemned to prison\, serving 11 years of an 18-year sentence.  After they are released\, the man they supposedly killed turns up alive. The film was initially banned in Spain and the director brought before the military courts; when it was allowed to be shown in 1981\, it became the highest-grossing Spanish film in the country up to that time. \n1979; Spanish with English subtitles; 92 minutes; Rated R (18+) \nFree community event \n \nIn February\, the Pioneras series featured on-line talks highlighting the work of women who have paved the way in investigating new artistic languages in disciplines such as electronic music\, video creation\, or photography. SUMMARY:Film: Ciclo Ángela Molina\, Las cosas del querer
DESCRIPTION:12 pm (available for 48 hours) \nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel HERE \nJaime Chávarrri’s Las cosas del querer follows the trajectory of a song-and-dance duo and their piano player in the 1940s\, with a look into their backstage lives and an evocation of the popular music of their times. As the group’s rise to fame and fortune parallels Franco’s consolidation of power in collusion with the Spanish aristocracy\, their return to Madrid marks the most difficult  moments of their careers. Lavishly produced and vibrantly entertaining as a musical\, Las cosas del querer also addresses issues of fascism\, feminism\, and homophobia in postwar Spain. \nFree event \n \n1989; Spanish with English subtitles; 89 minutes; rated G. \nÁngela Molina’s distinguished career began in the midst of Spain’s transition to democracy\, and continues to this day. She has also appeared in numerous international films\, beginning with her appearance in Luis Buñuel’s last film\, That Obscure Object of Desire. In recognition of her brilliant career\, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded her the 2021 Goya Prize of Honor. Instituto Cervantes is pleased to present “Ciclo Ángela Molina” in homage to this extraordinary artist\, beloved for her authenticity\, her undeniable talent and her special sensibility\, and in gratitude for her outstanding contributions to Spanish cinema.
