DESCRIPTION:10 am (screenings at 11 am & 2 pm) \nFree screenings of the documentary film Willie Velasquez Your Vote Is Your Voice and voter registration drive\, presented in partnership with New Mexico PBS. Patrons will be able to register to vote on-site. \nThe film will provide a better understanding of historical\, political\, and social issues facing Latinos\, America’s largest growing minority group. SUMMARY:Book Reading & Signing: The Mariachi Murder (Jemimah Hodge Mystery Series)
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin us for a book reading and signing with celebrated artist and author Marie Romero Cash as she reads from “The Mariachi Murder”\, the fourth murder mystery in her series featuring forensic psychologist Jemimah Hodge. The novel offers readers the pleasures we have come to expect from the Jemimah Hodge series: a vivid physical and cultural landscape populated with true-to-life characters in a fast-paced story. Set in New Mexico\, in and around Santa Fe\, the familiar—Cash’s family has lived here for generations—meets the mysterious when a mariachi musician turns up dead in the high desert. Forensic psychologist Jemimah Hodge and her sheriff’s detective amor Rick Romero need to solve a murder\, and that requires their ability to sort through the Hispanic\, Anglo\, and Pueblo eccentricities of New Mexico.\nFree Community Event \n \nRomero Cash will discusses how she started writing murder mysteries\, along with her other non-fiction writing\, stemming from a career as an award-winning Santera. As a 30 year participant at Spanish Market\, she has received many awards\, including the Master’s Award for Lifetime Achievement.  She has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities\, and Women in the Arts.  Marie Romero Cash has created art for many churches in the United States and in Mexico\, including Stations of the Cross for the Basilica of St. Francis in Santa Fe. Romero Cash is also the author of “Living Shrines: Devotional Spaces in Northern New Mexico Homes”; “Santos: Enduring Images of Northern New Mexican Village Churches”; “Tortilla Chronicles: Growing up in Santa Fe”; and  “Lowrider Blues: Reflections from my Inner Barrio”. \nThe presentation will be followed by a book signing. This free Saturday event will take place at 2pm on October 1st\, 2016 in the Library within the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s History and Literary Arts Building.

SUMMARY:La Canoa: In The Country of Empty Crosses: The Story of a Hispano Protestant Family in Catholic New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nArturo Madrid\, Distinguished Professor of the Humanities\, Trinity University\n-In The Country of Empty Crosses: The Story of a Hispano Protestant Family in Catholic New Mexico \nJoin Dr. Arturo Madrid\, Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Trinity University for a talk on “In The Country of Empty Crosses: The Story of a Hispano Protestant Family in Catholic New Mexico”. This La Canoa: Legacy Talks presentation will explore Dr. Madrid’s remembrances of his Hispano Protestant family in Catholic New Mexico\, and the themes of place\, culture\, and belonging. \nA native of New Mexico and a graduate of the University of New Mexico (1960)\, Dr. Madrid holds a Ph.D. degree in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from UCLA. He is the Norine R. and T. Frank Murchison Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Trinity University and the recipient of the Charles Frankel Prize in the Humanities in 1996\, awarded by the National Endowment of the Humanities. Prior to joining the faculty of Trinity University in 1993\, Madrid served as the founding president of the Tomás Rivera Center\, the nation’s first institute for policy studies on Latino issues\, a position he held from 1984 to 1993.\nFree public event \n \nThe La Canoa Legacy Series features talks by Hispanic/Latino academic and community researchers with long-standing and distinguished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. Like la canoa—referring in New Mexican Spanish to several utilitarian objects used to receive and transport people and resources and thus provide a service to the community—these talks are meant to serve the community by presenting new or overlooked information about our region to interested audiences. We want them to transport us to new understandings \nof our region and its rich cultural and historical inheritance\, and to move the conversation back and forth in rich dialogue between presenters and audience members. \nThe talk will be held in the History and Literary Arts Building-Library on Saturday\, October 15\, 2016 at 2pm.
