SUMMARY:Braceros Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives\, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States\, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term\, primarily agricultural labor contracts. In 1942\, these workers came to remedy wartime production shortages by supplying much-needed labor during the early years of World War II.  The Bracero Program\, which derived its name from the Spanish word for a manual laborer\, “bracero” continued uninterrupted until 1964. During this extensive program\, 4.6 million contracts were signed\, with many individuals returning several times on different contracts\, making it the largest United States contract labor program. An examination of the exhibition images\, documents\, and artifacts contributes to our understanding of the lives of migrant workers in Mexico and the United States\, as well as our knowledge of immigration\, nationalism\, labor practices\, and race relations.\nThis exhibit is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications
DESCRIPTION:Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing\, creating art\, writing\, learning from guest artists\, writing\,  sharing\, writing\, collaborating\, writing\, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. The program runs each weekend day in June from 9:30 am- 4 pm with a free lunch included. DESCRIPTION:6 pm\, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) \nThe NHCC is committed to cultivating local writers and celebrating their work. In this workshop\, writers read excerpts from books by Latinx authors\, engage in a variety of writing exercises that build skills and generate new writing\,. Each class gives a public reading as a culminating event. Instructor:  Brenna Gomez (UNM). \nDeadline to register: Monday\, January 14\, 2019. \nWorkshop Fee: $250 (about $30 per class). SUMMARY:La Canoa: Daniel Webb "The Power and Place of the Apachería in Colonial New Mexico"
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Daniel Webb as he examines the history of the diverse population of Athapaskan-speaking peoples identified as Apache (Ndé) in the colonial archives of northern New Spain. He will trace the different stages of their migration and territorial expansion across the vast geographical expanse known as the Apachería (the Apaches’ ancestral homelands)\, illustrating their relations with other sovereign Indian nations and Hispano settlers\, and the policies that Spain introduced in the eighteenth century to restrict their mobility. Through analysis of a wide range of historical materials\, including sources from the Spanish Archives of New Mexico and the Archivo General de la Nación de México\, Webb’s research highlights the cultural practices and the environmental conditions that allowed the diverse Apache bands\, clans and family lineages to flourish in the periphery of colonial New Mexico. Paradoxically\, this contributed to the decline of tribal sovereignty in the nineteenth century. \nDaniel Webb (University of Chicago\, Ph.D. 2017) is a Visiting Scholar at the University of New Mexico’s Center for Regional Studies. He is an early American historian with specializations in Native American\, U.S.-Mexico Borderlands\, and Latino/a history. His research has been supported by the John Carter Brown Library\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture. \nThis event is free and open to the public
