SUMMARY:Braceros Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives\, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States\, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term\, primarily agricultural labor contracts. In 1942\, these workers came to remedy wartime production shortages by supplying much-needed labor during the early years of World War II.  The Bracero Program\, which derived its name from the Spanish word for a manual laborer\, “bracero” continued uninterrupted until 1964. During this extensive program\, 4.6 million contracts were signed\, with many individuals returning several times on different contracts\, making it the largest United States contract labor program. An examination of the exhibition images\, documents\, and artifacts contributes to our understanding of the lives of migrant workers in Mexico and the United States\, as well as our knowledge of immigration\, nationalism\, labor practices\, and race relations.\nThis exhibit is free and open to the public

DESCRIPTION:Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. SUMMARY:National Poetry Month
DESCRIPTION:Join the NHCC’s History and Literary Arts program for a month of events including widely distributed pocket-size poems (in English and Spanish)\, poetry readings and book signings (including those associated with the Children’s Bilingual Book Festival)\, displays\, and other events celebrating Latinx poets.  In 2019\, for the 100th birthday of Walt Whitman\, we will pair several Whitman poems with poems by Latinx writers\, creating a “conversation” between poets who never met\, but who talk to each other across time. \n \nA Night of Poetry\nApril 10\, 6 pm\nNHCC Library | Free \nJoin us to celebrate new poetry by writers completing an 8-week workshop at the NHCC. In 2018 the NHCC launched a series of community writing workshops in memoir\, fiction and poetry. Each culminates with a reading of new work created by local authors. \nNHCC Children’s Bilingual Book Festival\nApril 27\, 9 am – 5 pm\nNHCC Campus |FREE ($5 suggested donation) \nThis free festival will celebrate children’s books written in Spanish and English and Native languages and English. DESCRIPTION:In April 2019\, we made lemonade out of lemons in the Art Museum. Not real lemonade\, because food and drink aren’t allowed in the Museum! \nWe were expecting construction\, and to keep the art safe\, it had to be put in storage. We took the families participating in our Saturday program\, Vamos al Museo into the Museum to look at blank walls. Crazy right?!  It turned in to one of our favorite art making experiences during this program. Our source for art making inspiration were the wall labels that accompany the art\, written by our curators  which often include statements from the artists. Art makers from age 2 – 80 years old participated.\n \n \nClick HERE and find three wall labels from popular art pieces in the museum. Since the beginning of the 9th century\, when the tomb was discovered\, Santiago de Compostela has been a pan-European place of peregrination. The city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985\, and the European Union declared the Camino de Santiago to be the first European Cultural Itinerary in 1987. According to Catholic tradition\, completing a pilgrimage on the Camino\, some 500 miles along the major routes\, assures forgiveness of one’s sins. The walk now attracts people of all faiths and backgrounds\, and over 200\,000 contemporary pilgrims embark on the journey each year. \nThe April films\, as well as the first May film\, in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series\, presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Resource Center\, have been selected for their insights into different elements of the Way\, capturing the spiritual significance and the rich history of this iconic pilgrimage.

DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join Valerie Rangel\, community planner and environmental planning consultant\, as she shares historical research\, land use planning\, and policy frameworks that shed light on issues of environmental contamination and public health while uplifting the voices of immigrant farm workers\, tribal members\, environmental and social activists from the communities of Nuevo México. She will focus on the history and contributions of the communities of Albuquerque\, Santa Fe\, Pueblo of Isleta as well as sacred sites\, the Gila River and Rio Grande. \nValerie Rangel earned a Master’s Degree in Community Regional Planning with an emphasis in environmental and natural resource management\, indigenous planning and public health. Her education involved environmental science\, southwest history\, Native American studies and cultural anthropology. Having taught college science courses\, she presently works as an environmental planning and public health assessment consultant and community program manager for the New Mexico Community Foundation (NMCF) and volunteers as a river steward and social justice activist. \nThis event is free and open to the public
