SUMMARY:Braceros Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives\, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States\, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term\, primarily agricultural labor contracts. In 1942\, these workers came to remedy wartime production shortages by supplying much-needed labor during the early years of World War II.  The Bracero Program\, which derived its name from the Spanish word for a manual laborer\, “bracero” continued uninterrupted until 1964. During this extensive program\, 4.6 million contracts were signed\, with many individuals returning several times on different contracts\, making it the largest United States contract labor program. An examination of the exhibition images\, documents\, and artifacts contributes to our understanding of the lives of migrant workers in Mexico and the United States\, as well as our knowledge of immigration\, nationalism\, labor practices\, and race relations.\nThis exhibit is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications
DESCRIPTION:Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing\, creating art\, writing\, learning from guest artists\, writing\,  sharing\, writing\, collaborating\, writing\, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. The program runs each weekend day in June from 9:30 am- 4 pm with a free lunch included. DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nJoin us for a paired perspective tour of the exhibition\, Qué Chola\, with Dr. Nancy López and Jessica Helen Lopez as they share their unique insights on the artworks and exhibition as a whole! Dr. López is a professor of sociology at the University of New Mexico. She directs and co-founded the Institute for the Study of Race and Social Justice and she is the founding coordinator of the New Mexico Statewide Race\, Gender\, Class Data Policy Consortium. Jessica Helen Lopez is the City of Albuquerque Poet Laureate and is a nationally recognized award-winning slam poet with a number of published poetry collections. She is the host of arts-based PBS\, ¡COLORES! and named one of the “10 Up and Coming Latinx Poets You Need to Know” by “Remezcla.” \nFree and open to the public (donations welcome)

SUMMARY:La Canoa: John Mraz "The Braceros Program and the Hermanos Mayo"
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join us as Dr. Mraz examines the Hermanos Mayo\, Spanish-Mexican photojournalists whose images of the braceros make up the current NHCC exhibit\, Braceros: Photographed by the Hermanos Mayo. The photojournalist collective knew what it meant to emigrate\, as their story began during one of the modern world’s great conflagrations: the Spanish Civil War. With the defeat of the Republic in 1939\, the Mayo came to Mexico where they worked for more than 40 periodicals\, creating an enormous archive of some five million negatives. The Hermanos Mayo’s photographs of the braceros are important for what they show us about these migratory workers and what they tell us about the perspectives of these graphic reporters. It is important to applaud the artfulness of the Mayo collective while recognizing that particular social realities had to exist before they could be reproduced in photographs. As Julio Mayo said\, “Photography has its creative part\, but within reality.” \nJohn Mraz is Research Professor at the Instituto de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades\, Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (Mexico) and National Researcher III. He has published more than 200 articles\, book chapters\, and essays in Europe\, Latin America\, and the United States on the uses of photography\, cinema\, and video in recounting history. Among his books are Photographing the Mexican Revolution; Looking for Mexico: Modern Visual Culture and National Identity; Nacho López\, Mexican Photographer\, and Uprooted: Braceros in the Hermanos Mayo Lens. He has directed award-winning documentaries\, and curated many international photographic exhibits. \nAnd don’t forget to stop in the History and Literary Arts building to see the Braceros exhibit photographed by The Hermanos Mayo. \nThis event is free and open to the public
