All of Albuquerque and parts of several Native American pueblos and reservations lie in the path of an annular (“ring”) solar eclipse on October 14\, 2023\, which falls during the International Balloon Fiesta. All of New Mexico will have a second\, partial solar eclipse six months later\, on April 8\, 2024. Reflecting the region’s wonderful diversity and rich history of Sun-watching\, this presentation\, featuring speakers from the American Astronomical Society and NASA’s PUNCH mission\, will prepare you for these exciting cosmic events while sharing scientific\, cultural\, and historical perspectives on solar eclipses. \nFree community event \n \nRun time: 60 min \n\nThe event is a rental event\, not an NHCC production. DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nSalon Ortega \nJoin us for an artist talk with Joel Salcido from Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave).  Joel will do a reading from his book\, The Spirit of Tequila and guests from the audience will have an opportunity for a Q&A followed by a book signing. \nThe Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave) exhibition explores and celebrates the landscape\, culture\, and traditions that gave birth to tequila\, Mexico’s national drink. In this series\, photographer Joel Salcido includes the original distilleries that literally founded the industry\, as well as several artisanal tequileras committed to the ancestral ways of making tequila from harvest to bottle.  Objects and paintings related to the theme of agave will be on display from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum Permanent Collection and loans from various institutions and artist Hailey Marmolejo. \n

Each gathering in this series will focus on a different cultural aspect of the question: “Who or what is Latinidad?” Voces de Latinidad aims to feature unique voices from our community culminating in a short documentary and digital archive celebrating the rich diversity of our lived experiences. \nOn June 24\, we invite all people of Hispanic\, Latina/o/e/x\, Chicana/o/e/x\, Indigenous\, and New Mexican heritage from the communities of Barelas\, Atrisco\, the greater South Valley\, and surrounding neighborhoods to come and share how you identify culturally and how this shapes your reality and lived experiences. \nFree Community Event. Please register using the link below. \n \nSpeaker: Joanna Keane Lopez is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is informed through adobe\, paper\, clay\, wood\, textiles and song. She inherited the practice of working with adobe\, a mixture of mud and straw\, from her family who constructed\, maintained\, and lived in earthen homes. She is also informed by the teachings of enjarradoras and adoberas\, women who specialize in the traditional craft of earthen architecture who continue the practice today in the complex cultural landscape of New Mexico. \n*Note: Community Sessions will be filmed and some individuals may be selected for interviews. Tickets will be available at the event one hour prior to the performance. \n \nDirector’s Note: It could be argued that Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors has no socially redeeming value.  A very young William Shakespeare cobbled together his own take on several ancient Roman comedies – zapped it with a modern sensibility – wrote in better jokes – added more plot twists – and included a dash of his growing romantic brilliance – and voilà.  It’s all that and it is more. It is filled with mad-dash playful action interrupted by stand-up routines – mistaken identities and their hilarious consequences – melodramatic longing and joyous reunions. \nAt its heart\, is a play about the exuberance of youth. The Comedy of Errors does not shed new light on the human condition or plumb the depths of the human psyche. It throws a brilliant and playful spotlight on the simple follies of humble humans. It is a play about us.  How nice of Shakespeare to send us this giggling love letter 400 years ago.
