SUMMARY:Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve
DESCRIPTION:This exciting exhibit features approximately fifty works of art from the Joyce Kaser Collection. Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve examines the various ways in which New Mexican artists and others visually portray these two famous figures as well as the flora and fauna in their surroundings.  For example\, how many apples are featured\, or are they pomegranates? Is the serpent male or female? Is it animal or human\, or half and half? Is Eve always the instigator or is Adam assuming some responsibility? Situated in the NHCC Art Museum’s highly popular community gallery\, Southwest of Eden invites the visitor to take a closer look at the imagery\, symbolism and story of what happened in the garden.

DESCRIPTION:All events at the NHCC through April 9\, 2020 have been cancelled / postponed.\nPlease call the NHCC at 505-246-2261 for more information. \n11 am \nThis is the third and last of a series of workshops about the Aztec calendar\, covering a range of subject matter pertaining to this indigenous timekeeping device that was rediscovered in Mexico City in 1790. It is an explanation of the 260-day ceremonial year. \nFree public event \n \nThese workshops provide background information for the celebration of Yankwik Xiwitl\, or Mexika/Aztec New Year\, hosted by Kalpulli Ehecatl and Kalpulli Izkalli on Sunday\, March 15\, on the NHCC’s Plaza Mayor. The free public event\, ushering in Chikyei Tekpatl/Ocho Pedernal/Eight Stone Blade\, features fire making with a hand drill\, an offering of flowers and fruit\, and ritual Aztec dancing. \nThere are three different year counts in traditional Mesoamerican culture: a lunar year\, a solar year\, and a Venutian year. Mexika New Year celebrates the solar year of 365.25 days. \nFor more information\, e-mail pazehecatl@hotmail.com.

SUMMARY:27th Annual César Chávez Day Fiesta
DESCRIPTION:All events at the NHCC through April 9\, 2020 have been cancelled / postponed.\nPlease call the NHCC at 505-246-2261 for more information. \nMarch—10:30 am\nFiesta—12 noon-3 pm \nJoin us in honoring the life and legacy of César Chávez at the 27th annual César Chávez Day Fiesta\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia– beginning at 10:30 am at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and ending at noon on the Center’s Plaza Mayor.  Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, and live music by Ivón Ulibarrí’s Café Mocha and the All Star Band. This event also honors the 2020 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! Awardees—people who have served our community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nFree public event \n \nWe are proud once again to welcome Dolores Huerta\, celebrating her 90th birthday this year\, to deliver our keynote speech. A native of Dawson\, NM\, Huerta was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, she was recognized for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. This year’s César Chávez Day festivities will include the dedication of Avenida Dolores Huerta\, a portion of Albuquerque’s Bridge Boulevard that has been renamed in her honor. Avenida Dolores Huerta\, running from the city/county boundary at the Rio Grande to the east and Isleta Boulevard to the west\, will connect to Avenida César Chávez\, making it the nation’s first intersection of streets bearing the names of these two civil rights leaders who worked side-by-side for so many years.
