Salud y Sabor celebrates Mexico and Día de los Muertos
Domenici Education Building - Grand Hall11:30 am - 2 pm Free Family Fun Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC is a free event with food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment. NHCC Torreón 1701 4th street SW, Albuquerque, NM, United States12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. Who We Are, Together: NM Families Project Presentation for Martinez and Tafoya
History and Literary Arts Building2-4 pm This project engaged 2-3 generations of seven NM families in testing their DNA and researching their family lineage with the help of the NHCC and experts in the field. For seven Sundays these families will present what they learned about who they are, where they are, where they came from, and from whom they descend, followed by dialogue. Film: ¡COLORES! The Musical Adventures of John Donald Robb in New Mexico
NHCC-Newsletter-November-2-307 pm The late John Donald Robb loved and composed all kinds of music, but his passion for the songs of everyday folk is what he is remembered for most. Roaming the countryside of the Southwest during the 40s and 50s, Robb recorded and transcribed over 3,000 Hispano folk songs, the largest collection of its time. This documentary celebrates the life of this adventurous musician and the modern day ethnomusicologists who continue to record and archive New Mexico's disappearing folk music traditions. The third day is celebrated as the main Diwali festival, or “Festival of Lights,” and different varieties of colorful fireworks are always associated with this festival. The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas Opening Reception
