SUMMARY:Introduction to Flamenco Dance\, taught by Bridgit Luján
DESCRIPTION:7:15 pm to 8:15 pm\nStudents will learn basic flamenco technique and a short choreography.  No experience required; men and women of all ages and ability are welcome!\n$10 suggested donation \n \nBridgit (Brigida) Luján began studying dance at the age of two\, and earned a Master’s degree in dance from the University of New Mexico. After performing under the direction of Eva Encinias\, Lili del Castillo\, Pablo Rodarte\, and Antonio Hidalgo\, she joined Maria Benitez’ Estampa Española in 2000. She has traveled to Spain on numerous occasions to further her study of flamenco with many master teachers\, and has directed her own touring company since 2004. Over the past ten years\, she has performed in choreographed works in Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque and Festival Jerez. \nBridgit has taught at the University of New Mexico\, Santa Fe Community College\, Albuquerque Public Schools\, and National Conservatory of Flamenco\, and is a contributor to Dance Magazine. In 2013 she became the first and only American flamenco teacher to be an endorsed member of the Professional Association of Professors in Classical\, Ballet and Flamenco Dance of Madrid\, Spain (APDE). As founder and director of Dulce Flamenco Internacional\, she was awarded the Hall of Fame Young Alumni Award from UNM’s Anderson School of Management. \nFor questions\, please contact swflamencoarts@msn.com.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday-Saturday\, April 14-16\, 2016\n 7 pm—Thursday\n 8 pm—Friday & Saturday \nThis powerful\, poignant show features accomplished flamenco artists Marisol and Joaquin Encinias\, singer Vicente Griego\, guitarist Calvin Hazen\, and members of Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company\, directed by Joaquin Encinias. \nYjastros 30th Season will astound and delight with exquisite selections from the company’s repertory as they blend intricate rhythms\, delirious melodies\, and an uncanny elegance on a stage where impossible feats become reality. Audiences will share an intimate experience of the strength\, stamina\, grace\, and artistry needed to practice flamenco\, as well as the deep communication among the artists who create it. \nThe show presents works by artists from Spain\, featuring Gala Vivancos\, Javier LaTorre\, Valeriano Paños\, Alfonso Losa\, and Olga Pericet. DESCRIPTION:Pre-show reading—6 pm\n Performance—7 pm \nCommemorate the 400th anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes’ death with a special flamenco recital\, performed by singer and composer Fernando Barros Lirola and his company. \nThe performance will combine music and dance in an exploration of Cervantes’ major work\, Don Quixote\, and a tribute to the flamenco tradition\, one of the most revered in Spanish culture. It will be preceded by a reading of the best-known passages from Don Quixote. \nFernando Barros\, internationally recognized as an innovator\, reveals in his compositions the “melody” inherent in Spanish literature and poetry\, including the works of García Lorca\, Machado\, Jiménez\, and Cervantes.\nFree public event
