Indigenous Borderlands in North America Symposium

This symposium seeks to develop new borderland and border-crossing approaches to continental North America that center Indigenous peoples, homelands, political concerns, and related dynamics – temporally and spatially expanding borderlands frameworks. Bringing historians in strategic conversation with scholars of other disciplines and with Indigenous community members, we ask how cross-disciplinary and community-facing dialogue can advance humanistic knowledge, developing new ways to envision borders, crossings, histories, and futures in contexts of social and environmental change. The Mountains Wore Down to the Valleys Opening Reception

5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Join us for an opening reception to celebrate the artists behind our newest exhibition, The Mountains Wore Down to the Valleys! The Mountains Wore Down to the Valleys is a collaborative sound and visual installation by New Mexican artists Adri De La Cruz and Marisa Demarco. Arte Poquito: Teatro de Bebé

10:00 am Infants 0-18 months and their caregivers explore dramatic arts and even visit the NHCC Wells Fargo Theater. This multi-sensory program includes time for socializing and dramatic play. Arte Poquito is a free, monthly, 45-minute program for infants ages 0 to 18 months and caregivers that nurtures creativity and provides bilingual introductory arts experiences balanced with social interaction. Each program focuses on different aspects of Hispanic/Latine arts, including music, dance, and storytelling. Estoy Orgullosa de Mi Pasado tells the story of a Navajo girl named Tania. 6:15 pm Join us as essayist and teacher Francisco Carrillo Martín gives a talk that delves into some of the ideas in his latest book, Fuera de foco: cinco derivas por la obra de Juan Rulfo, which was published at the end of 2021. Through the Mexican author's literature and photography, he will reflect on how the migratory process of the 1940s and 1950s to the main Latin American cities transformed the voices and landscapes of the rural tradition. Oralidad Festival: Songs and Stories from the Native American Performing Arts Program

11:00 am Music, dance, and storytelling intermingle in a program that showcases Native American pride and culture. It is an intertribal presentation, directed by John Williams, that will be performed by students from Albuquerque Public Schools. The program will include two Native American songs, two winter stories accompanied by performances, and a Native American dance that allows for audience participation.
