La Cosecha Student Leadership Institute

The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to be a co-sponsor of the 11th Annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI 2019). SLI will take place Friday, November 15, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The institute is part of La Cosecha Dual Language Conference and will bring together over 240 linguistically and culturally diverse students from around the country to focus on issues of identity, leadership, and the development of an asset-based perspective related to their diverse backgrounds. Book Reading and Signing: Norma Elia Cantú, Cabañuelas

2 pm Norma Elia Cantú will read from her new novel, Cabañuelas (University of New Mexico Press, 2019), the successor to her award-winning Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera, which chronicles her childhood experiences on the border. Nena leaves Laredo, Texas, and moves to Madrid, Spain, to research the historical roots of traditional fiestas in Laredo. Immersing herself in post-Franco Spain and its rich history, its food, music, and fiestas, Nena finds herself falling for Paco, a Spaniard. ¡Iluminarte! 2019

4 pm - 8 pm National Hispanic Cultural Center/Paseo del Bosque Trail/CABQ BioPark and Tingley Beach ¡ILUMINARTE! is a winter holiday celebration inspired by luminarias and farolitos—a New Mexico tradition.  This Sunday evening event includes storytelling, an illuminated bike parade along the Paseo del Bosque Trail, and performances by Story Riders--a bilingual after-school and bike-riding program for elementary school students—with Circo Latino, AirDance New Mexico and Albuquerque Poet Laureate Michelle Otero. La Canoa – Giving Baque: On Hemispheric Indigeneities and the Southern Border of New Mexico

2 pm - 4 pm Building on and departing from the work of interethnic thought-leaders in New Mexico, Dr. Gregorio Gonzales will consider how competing logics of settler-statecraft and Native American nationhood operate in a place of both Native- and nuevomexicanx-led struggles for political autonomy and religious liberty. The current humanitarian crisis along New Mexico’s southern border demonstrates the urgency of Indigenous transnational existences as they transit and transgress the political integrities of settlerstates and tribal nations alike. Los Pastores de Belén

3 pm Los Pastores, the New Mexican Shepherds Play, was brought to New Mexico in 17th century from Spain. The play follows the adventures, antics, and battles of shepherds, angels, and devils. On their journey to Bethlehem to take their presents, the shepherds are waylaid by Demonio. The audience is amused by the mischief of Bartolo, the lazy shepherd, and the rhetorical prowess and swordplay of San Miguel. Noon - 2 pm Celebrate New Year’s Eve at the National Hispanic Cultural Center by touring 12 stations with interactive activities. Each station celebrates New Year’s Eve with a different tradition from a different country. In Brazil, eat seven raisins. In Mexico, pocket a handful of lentils. In Spain, eat 12 grapes and make 12 wishes. Tear up your 2019 calendars in Uruguay. In Colombia, create a little suitcase to celebrate adventures to come–and so much more! 2 pm - 4 pm In celebration of the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial, please join Dr. Anna Nogar as she explores the many facets of Nina Otero Warren. Early 20th century nuevomexicana Adelina “Nina” Otero-Warren ran for national office as a Republican candidate to Congress from New Mexico in 1922, shortly after women gained the right to vote. An advocate of suffrage, Otero-Warren achieved political prominence for her promotion of Spanish/English education, and involvement in educational and health efforts supporting Indo-Hispano nuevomexicanos. El Voto Femenino: Exhibit Opening

Friday, January 24, 2020 6 pm Join us for the opening of “El Voto Femenino: Sufragistas Latinas luchando por el derecho al voto. Celebrating Hispanic Women’s Suffrage Worldwide”. This exhibit, which will run from January 24 through June 30. The exhibit features women from 24 countries in the international Hispanic diaspora who were instrumental in women’s suffrage, including Nina Otero Warren (New Mexico, US), Bertha Lutz (Brazil), Mathilde Hidalgo de Procel (Ecuador), Elvia Carrillo Puerto (Mexico), Ofelia Domínguez Navarro (Cuba), Elena Caffarena (Chile), Josefa Llanes Escoda (Philippines) (more...)

The National Hispanic Cultural Center’s History and Literary Arts Program presents a new exhibit, “El voto femenino: Sufragistas Latinas luchando por el derecho al voto/The Women’s Vote: Latina Suffragists who Fought for the Right to Vote” which opens on Friday, January 24, 2020, and runs through June 30, 2020. There will be a free opening reception on Friday, January 24, 2020, from 6-8 pm in the historic History and Literary Arts (HLA) Building on the NHCC campus, where the exhibit is on display.
