Salud y Sabor Celebrates Peru: Tradicional

11:30 am to 2:30 pm Salud y Sabor is a free late morning/early afternoon of food, art, health, culture, and entertainment that celebrates our communities and connects families with nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and play. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, fun art and movement activities for kids and adults, health screenings, cultural exchange, and live entertainment.  Join us for free samples of local produce and special recipes. Opening Reception for Camina el Autor: The Iconography of Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala, Peruvian/Quechuan Chronicler

6-7:30 pm Camina el Autor showcases the extraordinary work of Guaman Poma; explores the history of the indigenous people of Peru, Andean civilization, and Spanish conquest; and broadens our understanding of Peruvian culture and history.The digital images and accompanying texts have been provided to the NHCC by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with assistance from the Consulate General of Peru in Denver. The NHCC has curated these (398 fullpage drawings) to present a vibrant and informative exhibit that encourages learning, discovery, and contemplation. Exhibit programming will (more...)

Breathe, Barelas, Breathe: A Reading of Excerpts from a Trilogy of One-Act Plays

6 pm Sunday, July 28, 6 pm at B. Ruppe Drugstore parking lot 807 4th St SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102 Free food and drink followed by a reading of excerpts from the trilogy. This trilogy of one-act plays is written by Barelas resident playwrights Raúl Garza, Leonard Madrid and Mónica Sánchez, and inspired by the history, dreams and musings of one of Albuquerque's oldest neighborhoods. 7 pm In the NHCC Wells Fargo Auditorium This will be a staged reading of the entire trilogy (90 minutes) followed by refreshments. This trilogy of one-act plays is written by Barelas resident playwrights Raúl Garza, Leonard Madrid and Mónica Sánchez, and inspired by the history, dreams and musings of one of Albuquerque's oldest neighborhoods. This trilogy has been developed with the support of Artful Life's El Puente/Barelas project and in partnership with the NHCC and Homewise. For seven Sundays these families will present what they learned about who they are, where they are, where they came from, and from whom they descend, followed by dialogue. 2-4 pm This project engaged 2-3 generations of seven NM families in testing their DNA and researching their family lineage with the help of the NHCC and experts in the field. For seven Sundays these families will present what they learned about who they are, where they are, where they came from, and from whom they descend, followed by dialogue. The monthly celebration of food, health, and community scheduled for Saturday, September 14 is canceled. As a reminder, Salud y Sabor will not take place in October; we will be back in November to celebrate Mexico and Día de los Muertos and look forward to celebrating Perú in 2020.
