Braceros Exhibit Opening Reception
History and Literary Arts Building6 pm This exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term, primarily agricultural labor contracts. Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications
History and Literary Arts BuildingVoces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing, creating art, writing, learning from guest artists, writing, sharing, writing, collaborating, writing, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. La Canoa: Outside the Recipes: the Sustenance of Story
2 pm Querencia as defined by Nuevomexicano scholar Juan Estevan Arellano is "love of place.” Please join Dr. Patricia Perea as she presents a talk on the articulation of querencia to speak directly with the writings and experiences discussed in this lecture. These writings include Fabiola Cabeza de Baca’s The Good Life: New Mexico Traditions and Food (2005), Denise Chávez’s A Taco Testimony (2006) and The Pueblo Food Experience: Whole Food of Our Ancestors (2016). In this workshop, writers read excerpts from books by Latinx authors, engage in a variety of writing exercises that build skills and generate new writing,. Inside Opera: María de Buenos Aires
History and Literary Arts Building5:30-7 pm NHCC Library, History and Literary Arts Building Opera novices and aficionados are invited to three free interactive presentations about "María de Buenos Aires," Astor Piazzolla’s extraordinary tango-opera. Over three Wednesday evenings, poet Valerie Martínez and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead you on a magical journey through the story, the libretto, the music, and the staging of this evocative work, which tells the story of María, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires, who sleepwalks through life, death, the afterlife, and is reborn into “innocence.” The music, by tango legend (more...)
