Dia de Los Muertos Art Show: “Lost Places”

New Mexico artists were invited to create 8” x 8” works of art with poetry or text that honor a place whose absence they mourn—whether a lost region of the Amazon, Chaco Canyon, or an abuela’s kitchen. Proceeds from sales of the works support the artists and NHCC History and Literary Arts programming. Opening Reception for NM Hometown Heroes
History and Literary Arts Building5:30 pm to 7:30 pm The New Mexico Hometown Heroes: Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients exhibit is a tribute to the six Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor recipients who have received the highest honor that the United States government bestows for acts of valor and heroism. La Canoa: Patriots From the Barrio
NHCC-Newsletter-August-26–September-72 pm Please join us and author Dave Gutierrez for a presentation of his book Patriots from the Barrio. Mr. Gutierrez will relate the true story of Company E 141st Infantry, the only all Mexican American U.S. Army unit in WWII. In September of 2017, Hollywood actor/producer Wilmer Valderrama obtained the film rights to the book. Dave Gutierrez is a professional researcher, historical presenter, and writer. Nuevomexicana/o Baby Boomers: Stories and Histories
NHCC-Newsletter-August-11-–-2412:30 pm to 2:30 pm Join us for a presentation by University of New Mexico students and professors Anna Nogar, Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Myrriah Gómez, Honors College who are collecting oral histories of Nuevo/Mexicana/o Baby Boomers. Students will present video excerpts of their interviews in which New Mexicans (born between 1945 and 1966) talk about family, identity, spirituality, history, culture and much more. La Canoa: The Nuclear Option: Perpetuating the Myth of New Mexico as Wasteland
NHCC-Newsletter-August-26–September-72 pm Please join UNM Assistant Professor Myrriah Gómez for a presentation on New Mexico and the nuclear option. Long before the nuclear industrial complex began in here in 1942, New Mexico was depicted by outsiders as a “wasteland.” In an effort to combat that historical portrayal, the New Mexico Bureau of Immigration issued Aztlán: The History, Resources and Attractions of New Mexico in 1885, a book that was used to recruit Anglos to New Mexico in an effort to shift the racial and ethnic demographics so as to earn statehood. 2020 Centennial of the Women’s Vote
History and Literary Arts Building3 pm The NHCC, in partnership with the City of Albuquerque, will host a meeting of organizations and individuals who are planning events for 2020, the 100th year anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women's constitutional right to vote. The initiative will create a master calendar for 2020 that will co-promote events and minimize conflicts, supporting a robust year of programming celebrating this national milestone, its importance, and its resonance in contemporary society. Writing Workshop: Fiction (All Genres)
History and Literary Arts Building6 pm, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) Do you love reading good fiction—whether historical, popular, literary or sci-fi? Have you always wanted to write stories or novels? This eight week workshop is designed for writers who want to try writing fiction or those who need inspiration (and skills) to write more. Inspired by fiction by Latinx writers, you will write new work, develop your narrative skills and receive valuable feedback for revision from your fellow writers. Inside Opera: María de Buenos Aires
History and Literary Arts Building5:30-7 pm NHCC Library, History and Literary Arts Building Opera novices and aficionados are invited to three free interactive presentations about "María de Buenos Aires," Astor Piazzola’s extraordinary tango-opera. Over three Wednesday evenings, poet Valerie Martínez and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead you on a magical journey through the story, the libretto, the music, and the staging of this evocative work, which tells the story of María, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires, who sleepwalks through life, death, the afterlife, and is reborn into “innocence.” The music, by tango legend (more...)
Writing Workshop: Fiction (All Genres)
History and Literary Arts Building6 pm, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) The NHCC is committed to cultivating local writers and celebrating their work. In this workshop, writers read excerpts from books by Latinx authors, engage in a variety of writing exercises that build skills and generate new writing,. Each class gives a public reading as a culminating event. Instructor: Brenna Gomez (UNM). Deadline to register: Monday, January 14, 2019. Workshop Fee: $250 (about $30 per class).
