SUMMARY:Into the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection
DESCRIPTION:October 6\, 2023 to April 14\, 2024 \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum is pleased to present Into the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection\, an exhibition celebrating paños as an art form and the contributions of incarcerated artists to the broader fields of Chicano and American art. The exhibition features over 100 paños or pañuelos (Spanish for cloth or handkerchief) amassed by the late collector and community advocate\, Rudy Padilla\, as well as artworks by New Mexican artists whose work has been influenced by the style and visual vocabulary of paño arte. \nThe Rudy Padilla Paño Collection was acquired by the Art Museum at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in 2019 and it is the largest public collection of its kind in the United States. The artworks and archive are significant resources for understanding and celebrating an important form of artistic and cultural expression created by incarcerated (and formerly incarcerated) artists from Chicano and Latino Communities across the Southwest U.S. The exhibition\, co-curated by Jadira Gurulé (NHCC Head Curator and Visual Arts Program Manager) and Rebecca Gomez (NHCC Curator)\, explores the interconnectedness of paño arte and Chicano and American art\, honors the social and cultural legacy of Padilla’s work\, and examines the topic of incarceration in contemporary society. \nTo learn more about the exhibition or share your experiences with paño arte\, please email Rebecca.Gomez@dca.nm.gov

DESCRIPTION:The Art Museum at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) is honored to host the exhibition Paño Connections organized by artist and guest curator Eric “Christo” Martinez.  On display in the Community Gallery\, which is dedicated to showcasing art by New Mexican artists\, this exhibit explores artworks inspired by paños (drawings on handkerchiefs) and other artworks created by incarcerated artists. This is the second iteration of this exhibit\, and Martinez’s goal is to expand connections among those who are passionate about this body of work. \nFeatured Artists: \nAdan Hernandez \, “Big Dave” Griego\, Carlos Contreras\, Carlos “Gordo” Vigil\, Chuey Armenta\, Crystalynn Maestas\, David C. Luna\, Eric Christo Martinez\, Eric Javier Martinez\, Eric Martinez\, Gerald Lovato\, Jeremy Hovey\, Jesse Casias\, Jimmy Santiago Baca\, Joey Nelson\, Keith Coughenhour\, Kevin Herrera Mauldin\, Leticia Luna\, Merrick Morton\, Phillip “Oso” Barrios\, Taylor Hackford \nAdditionally\, Paños Connections builds upon The Rudy Padilla Paño Project at the NHCC Art Museum.  The Rudy Padilla Paño Project includes a collection of art and paños by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists that was amassed by the late collector and community advocate\, Rudy Padilla\, his archive\, a traveling exhibit\, and catalogue.  This collaboration with Martinez builds upon the dialogue that honors the longstanding and ever-evolving artistic traditions born inside and expanding beyond the United States prison system.

SUMMARY:Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Billy the Kid & Other Tall Tales
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm Friday\n2:00 pm & 7:00 pm Saturday \nBilly the Kid\, Blue Jean Blues\, Southwest FolkTails\, & Giselle\nFestival Ballet Albuquerque presents an original production of Billy the Kid\, a ballet telling the story of Billy from childhood until his death at age 22\, true to historical accuracy as anyone knows. The ballet has an ensemble of cowboys\, townspeople\, dance hall girls\, and the important people in Billy’s life\, including his beloved Mother\, John Tunstall\, J.J. Dolan\, love interest Maria\, and of course\, Sheriff Pat Garrett. \n \nThe evening begins with the music of the Mystic Vic Blues Band playing live onstage with the FBA professional dancers in Blue Jean Blues choreographed by Patricia Dickinson Wells. A new children’s ballet\, Southwest FolkTails is based on families of New Mexican “critters” sporting tails with character costumes expertly designed and constructed by master craftsman\, Joe Moncada. Imagine hummingbirds\, quails\, coyotes\, snakes\, and roosters! \nThe evening ends with the classical 18th century ballet\, Giselle (in One Act) complete with village scenes\, beautiful costumes\, and scenery. The epic ballet premiered in 1841\, but most of the versions today are based on the revivals by choreographer Marius Petipa in the early 20th century.  Set to music by composer Adolphe Adam\, the epic story follows the tragically short life of Giselle through love\, heartache\, death\, and the after-death where she is summoned from her grave by the vengeful\, deadly sisterhood of the Willis who are unmarried women who died after being betrayed by their lover. Giselle’s great love for her betrayer\, Albrecht\, saves him from sure death by the Willis\, and thus saves herself from becoming one of them. \nCome ½ hour early before showtime and enjoy a pre-concert performance by Mystic Vic Blues Band! \n$14\, $20\, $29\, $39 & $49 w/ a $2 discount for seniors and children 10 years old and younger \nRun Time: 2 hours \n*The event is a rental event not an NHCC production. The title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. By serving as a venue and posting the event on its website\, the NHCC is not endorsing any views expressed in the title or description of the event\, nor is it endorsing the content of the event.
