7 pm Music has always been an integral part of the history of Barelas, and many of New Mexico’s well-known musicians have come from this community. In 2012, the NHCC partnered with the Barelas Coffee House to present the Rock ‘n’ Soul Show and Revue, then in its seventh year.  This event, showcasing great rock, soul, R&B and New Mexico rancherita tunes from the 1960s through the 1980s, recreated the touring shows performed in legendary Albuquerque venues during those years and provided a forum for the reunion (more...)

5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC, is a free evening of food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment. Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto and Baracutanga

7:30 pm Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, a traditional folkloric cumbia group from Colombia’s Caribbean region, has been active since 1940. Their music preserves the traditional rhythms and sounds that are the product of a mixture of Indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Colombian heritage. Dating back at least to the time of Bolivar, gaitero music is played on two flutes (gaitas) and a maraca, both of Indigenous origin, and drums of African origin, through the descendants of the many African slaves who passed through the country’s Caribbean coast. 7:30 pm Calixto Oviedo is a living encyclopedia of Cuban drumming and percussion, ranging from the deepest roots of African-influenced folklore to the hottest dance music and the cutting edge of jazz. Oviedo was one of the creators of the dynamic timba rhythm when he was the drummer for the iconic Havana group NG la Banda, and his innovative, brilliant percussive techniques have made him the in-demand drummer for the Afro-Cuban All Stars. 5 pm to 6 pm Family and Friends Dance Class - On Tuesday nights in June and July, the National Hispanic Cultural Center is offering Latin American and Hispanic dance classes at 5 pm for families and friends. These classes will foster an intergenerational learning atmosphere. Bring your kids! Bring your grandparents! Bring your neighbors! Learning about the history and culture of the dances will be included. Some dances that may be taught include salsa, bachata, merengue, Mexican ballet folklorico, chachacha, casino, and more. Domingos en Arte: Maferefun Orisha, A Salute to the Saints

7:30 pm Maferefun Orisha introduces the public to the pantheon of Afro-Cuban gods and goddesses. These saints—or Orisha—represent different aspects of nature and humanity. The first set of this performance showcases the Orishas through story, song, and dance. The Bataleros de Querque will sing traditional songs in Yoruban while playing the sacred batá drums, while the Odara Dance Ensemble will portray the different gods and goddesses through dance and costume.
