DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Hometown Heroes: Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients exhibit is a tribute to the six Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor recipients who have received the highest honor that the United States government bestows for acts of valor and heroism. It celebrates not only their stories of service but their connections to New Mexico: Private Joseph Martínez (WWII)\, Private José Valdez (WWII)\, Master Sergeant Alejandro Ruíz (WWII)\, Specialist Fourth Class Daniel Fernandez (Vietnam War)\, Chief Warrant Officer Louis Rocco (Vietnam War) Master Sergeant Leroy Petry (Operation Enduring Freedom). \nThis exhibition of photographs\, narratives\, and ephemera allows us to reflect on the sacrifices of those who served\, and those who follow in their footsteps. \nIt is on display in the NHCC History and Literary Arts building. The production features a large multigenerational cast including dancers as young as six\, as well as Baila! Baila!’s professional company dancers. \nSpecial guest performances include Mariachi Tapatio from El Paso\, Texas\, and an appearance by company founder Israela Garcia. \nBaila! Baila! Dance Academy was founded in 1990 with the mission of educating students solely in traditional Mexican folk dance. Join us in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque for something unusual and very special. \nAll events are free and open to the public and take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \n1701 4th St. SW\, Albuquerque\, NM 87102 \nSCHEDULE \nSaturday\, December 8\, 2018 \nAll events are free and open to the public and take place in the History and Literary Arts Building at the NHCC. \n3-4 pm:  Talk: Enrique Lamadrid\, “Luminaria or Farolito? History/Legends/Myths of the Little Brown Bag with a Candle and Sand”.\nFree bicycle clinic with Esperanza. \n4-7 pm: “Luminarte” workshop — make your own luminaria/farolito work of art with Sara Daniele Rivera.\nPop Fizz open for dinner.\nPurchase t-shirts in the NHCC Library. \n4:30 pm:  Start of the illuminated bicycle parade/desfile de bicicletas illuminadas\, led by Storyriders students. The short ride is open to the public and will go along the Paseo del Bosque Trail. Arrive at 4 pm at the NW corner of the NHCC parking lot to start the ride at 4:30. Wear your “Team Farolito” or “Team Luminaria” t-shirt and adorn your helmet/bike/self with lights. \n5:30 pm:  Cyclists arrive at the NHCC plaza. Riders parade in a pattern in front of the pyramid steps. In 1999\, members of the Albuquerque Arts Alliance conferred the Bravos Award for Dance Excellence on The Performers Ballet & Jazz Company. SUMMARY:La Canoa: The Nuclear Option: Perpetuating the Myth of New Mexico as Wasteland
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nPlease join UNM Assistant Professor Myrriah Gómez for a presentation on New Mexico and the nuclear option. Long before the nuclear industrial complex began in here in 1942\, New Mexico was depicted by outsiders as a “wasteland.” In an effort to combat that historical portrayal\, the New Mexico Bureau of Immigration issued Aztlán: The History\, Resources and Attractions of New Mexico in 1885\, a book that was used to recruit Anglos to New Mexico in an effort to shift the racial and ethnic demographics so as to earn statehood. Building on Anglo rhetoric from the 19th century\, the federal government continues to use the same arguments to convert New Mexico into the premier repository for the nation’s nuclear waste. This talk will discuss the rearticulationof New Mexico as a nuclear wasteland in the 20th and 21st centuries. \nMyrriah Gómez is a Nuevo Mexicana from the Pojoaque Valley. She is an Assistant Professor in the Honors College at the University of New Mexico. Myrriah’s current book project\, NuclearNuevo México: Identity\, Ethnicity\, and Resistance in Atomic Third Spaces\, examines the effects of the nuclear industry on people of color in New Mexico.
