DESCRIPTION:The Chola is a significant figure in the Latina imagination for the ways that she represents a feminine strength\, power\, and resilience in the face of racial\, gender\, and economic adversity. She is a figure that many young Latinas in the U.S. admire and emulate. The last few years have seen a surge in interest in the Chola as a figure and this exhibition will explore this dynamic from a feminist perspective through art and popular culture. \nThe Qué Chola Photo Board will be displayed in the exhibition and is an opportunity to honor the Cholas in our lives\, past and present\, by sharing photos of homegirls showing off their style and pride. \nIf you have a photo you’d like included on the photo board you can send them to us. And if you send them before March 8\, they will be part of the Qué Chola! opening reception. DESCRIPTION:Camina el Autor showcases the extraordinary work of Guaman Poma; explores the history of the indigenous people of Peru\, Andean civilization\, and Spanish conquest; and broadens our understanding of Peruvian culture and history.The digital images and accompanying texts have been provided to the NHCC by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, with assistance from the Consulate General of Peru in Denver. The NHCC has curated these (398 fullpage drawings) to present a vibrant and informative exhibit that encourages learning\, discovery\, and contemplation. DESCRIPTION:10:30 am to 12 pm \nA great morning of art-making for children of all ages and families of all sizes. A visit to the museum is included in this artist-led workshop. We will meet in the Creative Classroom in the Pete V. Domenici Building. \nPlease pre-register HERE (so we know how many materials to prepare) \nThis month\, work with guest artist Sean Wells who will discuss working in the contemporary style inspired by traditional Spanish Colonial Art forms. She will lead us in a painting workshop using acrylic paints on canvas. Paintings created during this month’s HAH or Vamos will be voluntarily included in an exhibition in the education building. \n \nAbout Sean Wells: \nSean’s artwork has been featured on internationally distributed beer labels (Cerveza de los Muertos)\, nationally distributed wine labels (La Catrina Vino) and New Mexico Lottery Scratchers for which she received a national award for top scratcher design. She is an award-winning 5th generation Spanish Colonial artist and juried member of the Spanish Colonial Arts Society in the retablo category\, promoting the traditional arts through her television show\, New Mexican Santera.  Sean received “Best Visual Artist 2016” and “Top 5 Artists” 2017 and 2018 from the readers of Albuquerque the Magazine. Followed by refreshments. \nThis trilogy of one-act plays is written by Barelas resident playwrights Raúl Garza\, Leonard Madrid and Mónica Sánchez\, and inspired by the history\, dreams and musings of one of Albuquerque’s oldest neighborhoods. This trilogy has been developed with the support of Artful Life’s El Puente/Barelas project and in partnership with the NHCC and Homewise. \nTwo additional readings of the plays are below: \nPAST\nSunday\, July 28\, 6 pm at B.
