DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque 31 presents Compañía Isabel Bayón’s Dju Dju\, an Israel Galván creation for Isabel Bayón. \nIn an extraordinary collaboration\, avant-garde choreographer and dancer Israel Galván directs classical dancer Isabel Bayón as she reinvents herself\, exploring the demons and superstitions of the flamenco world along with her husband\, guitarist Jesús Torres\, and dancers Alicia Márquez and Nieves Casablanca. “Torres recites a litany of her superstitions; Bayón crosses herself\, or shoos off bad spirits even as she’s willfully stomping on glass. The music veers from eerie lullabies to full church-organ portentousness…. Dju Dju works ultimately because it draws on qualities close to flamenco’s heart: wayward rhythms\, unresolved dissonances\, irrational passions\, the summoning of hidden forces.” (Sanjoy Roy\, The Guardian) \nBorn in Seville\, Isabel Bayón has performed at numerous national and international festivals\, and formed her own company in 2001\, creating a series of award-winning shows. DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nJune screenings in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series initiate Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on our Immigration Experience. This six-week series is a project of City Lore\, a cultural center for the arts and humanities based in New York City. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of NEH’s Community Conversations initiative\, and features documentary film screenings and scholar-led discussions designed to encourage an informed discussion of immigration issues against the backdrop of our immigration history. \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is one of 24 organizations selected nationwide to participate in the Becoming American project. The scholar/moderator for the screenings and discussions at the Center is Dr. Gabriel Sanchez\, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico. The theme for Unit One\, presented on June 14\, is “The Century of Immigration.” \nEpisode 4\, “The Power and the People\,” of New York: A Documentary Film examines the great wave of immigration that began in the late 19th century\, tripled New York’s population\, and transformed the city and the nation. On camera\, renowned historians like David McCullough and writers like Pete Hamill describe the new tide of humanity from southern and eastern Europe—Italians\, Poles\, Turks\, Hungarians\, Ukrainians\, Greeks—their reasons for migrating\, their passage through Ellis Island\, their life on the Lower East Side\, and their role in transforming America into an industrial nation.\n2004; directed by Ric Burns; 30 minutes; English; not rated. \nEpisode 2\, “A World of Their Own\,” from the award-winning series The Jewish Americans explores in depth the story of one of the groups that made up the great wave of immigration described above. Many migrated across the U.S.\, but the majority created a new life in Manhattan’s slums. SUMMARY:Remember the Time
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nMusic has always been an integral part of the history of Barelas\, and many of New Mexico’s well-known musicians have come from this community. In 2012\, the NHCC partnered with the Barelas Coffee House to present the Rock ‘n’ Soul Show and Revue\, then in its seventh year.  This event\, showcasing great rock\, soul\, R&B and New Mexico rancherita tunes from the 1960s through the 1980s\, recreated the touring shows performed in legendary Albuquerque venues during those years and provided a forum for the reunion of some of the city’s finest musicians from that era. In 2014 the Barelas Coffee House presented Oh What A Night\, and in 2015 Cruizin’ Central\, to sold-out houses; these were unique opportunities for family and friends to come together and listen\, sing along\, and dance to music from the 1950s through the 1980s. In 2016 and 2017\, the first and second Remember the Time dance concerts brought back memories of happy times at venues such as the Civic Auditorium\, Leo’s La Roc\, and the Far West. This year’s concert\, focusing on more recent decades\, once again celebrates life\, love\, and music at its best with great Albuquerque musicians who have been entertaining New Mexico audiences over the years.  Featured bands are Picoso\, Fat City\, and Soul Divine\, three dynamic local dance bands with dedicated fan bases. \nOpened in 1978 as a precursor to the ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood\, the Barelas Coffee House is itself an iconic Albuquerque venue and a popular local meeting place as well as a tourist attraction.  The NHCC is once again entering into a presenting partnership with the Barelas Coffee House\, through owner Michael Anthony Gonzales\, for the 3rd annual Remember the Time dance concert.\n$27 w/ $2 off for NHCC members

As the town erupts in controversy\, we hear from all parts of the community: Latino workers grappling with their own immigrant identity; longtime African American residents balancing perceived threats to their livelihood against the values they learned from their own civil rights struggles; the Somali refugees attempting to make new lives for their families and maintain their dignity in a hostile new land; and white civic and church leaders who are attempting to guide their congregations and citizens through a period of unprecedented change.\n2010; directed by Kim A.
