Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company: Xicano Power
8:00 pm Friday, 4:00 pm Saturday National Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present the Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in Xicano Power. Xicano Power is the seasonal culmination of Yjastros’ progression and evolution. This performance made its world premiere at the 2023 Festival de Jerez, marking the first time a company from the United States was ever invited to perform in the prestigious international festival. New Mexico Young Actors: OZ!
1:30 pm & 4:30 pm New Mexico Young Actors presents OZ! A musical adaptation of Frank Baum’s classic tale: The Wonderful Wizard of OZ. The story starts with a cyclone that carries Dorothy and Toto to the magical Land of Oz. When Dorothy’s house squashes the Wicked Witch of the East, she is ecstatically thanked by the liberated Munchkins and given permission to wear the witch’s powerful sliver slippers. 2:00 pm, Social Justice Film Screening, Discussion to immediately follow. We will show 30 minutes total of Uphill on the Hill and Hardliner on the Hudson. They are unreleased. Both docs are 30-40 minutes each but given an hour 20 minutes is generally too long for audiences; we'll show abridged and polished 15-minute segments of each. In Uphill on the Hill, award -winning Cuban journalist Liz Olivia Fernandez travels to Washington D.C., where she exposes the political interests driving the U.S. government’s Cold War-era policy toward Cuba. 3:00 pm Música del Corazón celebrates its tenth anniversary with our favorite performers in the Nuevoméxicano tradition with Nueva Luna, a conjunto featuring Lara Manzanares, Rob Martínez, and Felix "Gato" Peralta, with special guest Jordan Wax, the founder of Lone Piñón. Two emerging ensembles join us: A new mix of Jarocho musicians under the leadership of the renowned Laura Rebolloso, and UNM's Mariachi Lobo directed by Robert Lucero, Jr., with ethnomusicologist Adolfo Estrada. 2023 New Mexico Music Hall of Fame Award
6:30 pm The New Mexico Music Hall of Fame award show is to recognize those who have made significant contributions to our State's musical culture. The process of choosing these musical heroes begins each year with the New Mexico Music Hall of Fame Awards Committee asking New Mexico citizens to nominate artists and innovators they thought should be so honored.
