Tricky Dick is on the radio promising discipline. Dolores Huerta is holding the movement together with one hand. With the other\, she dials home\, again\, to say goodnight to children she hasn’t seen in weeks. \nShe’s not a symbol. Not yet.\nShe’s just doing the work. \nDolores is an opera that floats between the real and the imagined\, memory and nightmare. Composer Nicolás Lell Benavides and librettist Marella Martin Koch stitch history into something fragile and feverish. There are sacred chants\, electric guitar pulsations\, bossa nova hallucinations. \nLabor icon Dolores Huerta helped build a union out of dust and righteous anger. She walked the fields\, held the line\, made the calls. This film series continues with Plaza Catedral (2021) on Thursday\, Nov. 13. \nAlicia had a “perfect life” and lost it. Her six year old son died in an accident she feels she could have avoided. Her grief is plagued by guilt\, which has made her disassociate from society\, from married life\, and from herself. She now lives in the old quarter of Panamá\, a rich colonial enclave surrounded by Panamá’s poorest neighborhoods. There she meets Chief\, a street-smart 13 year old who takes care of cars in front of her apartment and insists on getting paid for his job. Alicia keeps a safe distance from him\, until one night Chief arrives at Alicia’s apartment bleeding from a gunshot wound\, and begs her for help. Reluctantly\, Alicia lets him in. What she could not imagine is that by opening the door to Chief\, she would open the door to an unforeseen emotional bond. Baila!’s annual holiday show is a whirlwind extravaganza\, taking audiences on a journey through the sights and sounds of Christmas in New Mexico and Christmas around the World. Music\, song\, and dance with the traditional Southwestern flair cultivated in our state over the generations\, as well as unique segments saluting Christmas traditions from around the world\, will delight theatregoers of all ages. \nIn 2025\, Baila! Baila! will be celebrating their 36th year in spectacular fashion. Christmas in New Mexico features a large multigenerational cast including dancers as young as six\, as well as Baila! Baila!’s professional company dancers. Our musical guests will be the renowned Mariachi Tenampa with a special appearance by company founder Israela Garcia. Baila! Baila! The process of choosing these musical heroes begins each year with the New Mexico Music Hall of Fame Awards Committee asking New Mexico citizens to nominate artists and innovators they thought should be so honored. The nominations were then judged by the Committee and this years nine nominees were chosen for recognition of their lifetime achievement. The New Mexico Music Hall of Fame award show is dedicated to them and is a chance for many of their fans and friends to give heartfelt thanks for all they have done for the musical arts of New Mexico. The stories of each of our honorees are testimonies to lives well lived and generosity of spirit. Their artistry and innovations continue to inspire and provide direction for so many.
