    7 pm Music has always been an integral part of the history of Barelas, and many of New Mexico’s well-known musicians have come from this community. In 2012, the NHCC partnered with the Barelas Coffee House to present the Rock ‘n’ Soul Show and Revue, then in its seventh year.  This event, showcasing great rock, soul, R&B and New Mexico rancherita tunes from the 1960s through the 1980s, recreated the touring shows performed in legendary Albuquerque venues during those years and provided a forum for the reunion (more...)

  • On Point Dance Studio: Throwin’ It Back In Time (Rental)

  • Film: Welcome to Shelbyville

    7 pm June screenings in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series initiate Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on our Immigration Experience. This six-week series is a project of City Lore, a cultural center for the arts and humanities based in New York City. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of NEH’s Community Conversations initiative, and features documentary film screenings and scholar-led discussions designed to encourage an informed discussion of immigration issues against the backdrop of our (more...)

  • Summer Institute Performances: Circo Latino

    Thursday at 5 pm Friday at 10 am The NHCC’s Summer Institutes—Circo Latino, the Manoa Project, and Voces— come see young artists, ages 8-13, present an original show featuring trapeze, juggling, stilting, acrobatics, clowning, live music, and more. Free event with a suggested donation of $5 Deep gratitude to our sponsors who make the program possible: Nusenda Credit Union, Pacific Dental Services, City of Albuquerque Urban Enhancement Fund, Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation.

These classes will foster an intergenerational learning atmosphere. Bring your kids! Bring your grandparents! Bring your neighbors! Learning about the history and culture of the dances will be included. Some dances that may be taught include salsa, bachata, merengue, Mexican ballet folklorico, chachacha, casino, and more.   • Domingos en Arte: Calixto Oviedo y Son Sabroso

    7:30 pm Calixto Oviedo is a living encyclopedia of Cuban drumming and percussion, ranging from the deepest roots of African-influenced folklore to the hottest dance music and the cutting edge of jazz. Oviedo was one of the creators of the dynamic timba rhythm when he was the drummer for the iconic Havana group NG la Banda, and his innovative, brilliant percussive techniques have made him the in-demand drummer for the Afro-Cuban All Stars.
