Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Sacred Journeys II

Saturday, at 7 pm Sunday at 2 pm Classical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in this reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance, music, and spoken word. Mirabal collaborates with internationally renowned New York City Ballet dancer Jock Soto, of Navajo and Puerto Rican descent; Soto, who is originally from Gallup, NM, and will also make guest appearances onstage, now lives in Eagle Nest, NM. Summer Institutes Performances: The Manoa Project 2019

8 pm The NHCC’s Summer Institutes—Circo Latino, the Manoa Project, and Voces—join the Manoa Project Teen Ensemble for a stirring performance of a fully produced original show written and created by a group of theatre students who have trained and worked together over four weeks. $10 w/ $2 discount for students, seniors and NHCC members

Film: Embrace of the Serpent/El abrazo de la serpiente

7 pm Filmed almost entirely in black and white in the Amazon jungle, Embrace of the Serpent focuses on the relationship between an Amazonian shaman and two Western scientists over the course of 40 years, and was inspired by the travel journals, written decades apart, of two explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of a sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic plant. Film: Zoot Suit

7 pm In Zoot Suit, Luis Valdez weaves a story involving the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the subsequent, racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles.  The trial followed the death of José Díaz, found unconscious near the “Sleepy Lagoon” reservoir in 1942, and resulted in the conviction, despite insufficient evidence, of several young Latinos charged with complicity in his murder. Sandia Performing Arts Company Presents Rosalie’s Magic Rocks

Friday-Sunday, September 27-29 & October 4-6, 2019 7:30 pm—Friday & Saturday 2 pm—Sunday Sandia Performing Arts Company presents the world premiere of Rosalie’s Magic Rocks, a tale of how life changes for an enterprising young Latina. Rosalie goes to live with her grandfather, and, misinterpreting his advice, begins selling magic rocks at her school. When she gets into trouble, her abuelo assists her in finding a solution. The monthly celebration of food, health, and community scheduled for Saturday, September 14 is canceled. As a reminder, Salud y Sabor will not take place in October; we will be back in November to celebrate Mexico and Día de los Muertos and look forward to celebrating Perú in 2020.
