Domingos en Arte: Ivón Ulibarrí & Café Mocha

6 pm Domingos en Arte, the summer music and dance series presented by MelazaMusic and the National Hispanic Cultural Center, enters its fourth season beginning in June, with additional concerts scheduled through August. We have invited a wide range of Latin artists for family-friendly summer Sundays that feature live music, drinks, and delicious Latin cuisine in the NHCC’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard. Surviving Microaggressions Workshop (Rental)

10 am – 5 pm Domenici Education Building, Room 122/124 When you are often the only person who identifies the way you do, entering a room can be extremely uncomfortable. Now imagine that a joke is then made on your behalf. Poking fun at your natural hair, or teasing your personality characteristics because they reject the stereotype associated with your group affiliation. “Not being black enough,” “Acting white,” or having your native language skills criticized by friends and family are often commonplace. 6 pm Join us for a chat with artists Valerie Bower, Arthur López, and Delilah Montoya! The conversation will be intimate and casual as we chat about the artists’ work and the exhibit. 7 pm An escaped convict follows the Camino de Santiago in an attempt to recover the stolen jewels hidden years ago by a fellow inmate in the remote, wooded Galician village of Xanaz. There, he encounters sinister old men, strange disappearances, spirits, a peculiar priest, and even the archbishop of Santiago de Compostela in this tale full of fantasy, terror, and humor. Cardboard Playhouse Presents Disney’s Aladdin, Dual Language Edition

7 pm—Friday 2 pm—Saturday & Sunday Disney’s Aladdin, Dual Language Edition features the Academy Award-winning score from Disney’s animated classic, with lyrics in both Spanish and English and a revamped plot that creates dramatic necessity for the bilingual script. The story begins centuries ago, when the royalty of Agrabah spoke one language and the citizens another. Communication is impossible without translation—which is controlled by the evil vizier, Jafar. Camina el Autor: The Iconography of Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala, Peruvian/Quechuan Chronicler

Camina el Autor showcases the extraordinary work of Guaman Poma; explores the history of the indigenous people of Peru, Andean civilization, and Spanish conquest; and broadens our understanding of Peruvian culture and history.The digital images and accompanying texts have been provided to the NHCC by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with assistance from the Consulate General of Peru in Denver. The NHCC has curated these (398 fullpage drawings) to present a vibrant and informative exhibit that encourages learning, discovery, and contemplation. Exhibit programming will include talks (more…)

Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve

This exciting exhibit features approximately fifty works of art from the Joyce Kaser Collection. Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve examines the various ways in which New Mexican artists and others visually portray these two famous figures as well as the flora and fauna in their surroundings.  For example, how many apples are featured, or are they pomegranates?
