Each year in March the National Hispanic Cultural Center celebrates women with programming that honors their contributions to dance, music, theatre, art, poetry, films, novels, and much more. Listed below are all the events that you can experience at the Center during Women’s History Month. Below are our offerings for 2017.
March—11 am Fiesta—12 pm Join the 24th annual César Chávez Day celebration, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia—beginning at 10:30 am at the Dolores Huerta Gateway Park, picking up additional participants at the National Hispanic Cultural Center at 11:00 am, and ending at noon on the NHCC’s Plaza Mayor. Following the march, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry, dancing, community exhibits, children’s activities and games, food, a keynote speech by Dolores Huerta, and live music. 7 pm Public Academy for Performing Arts presents the annual Spring Dance Concert featuring beginning to pre-professional ballet, contemporary, flamenco, hip-hop, and jazz dance students in grades 6 – 12 $7, $12, $17 The title, content, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. 2 pm & 7 pm Dance Visions: Festival of New Ballets is headlined by a new ballet by David Chavez. Chavez, a dance icon in Albuquerque during the 1980s and early ‘90s who is known for such masterpiece ballets as Sleepy Hollow, Carmina Burana, and The Jungle Book, has created his most epic ballet in over 20 years. His new work, The Humiliation of Venus: A Mythical Fantasy, is a multimedia one-act ballet based on mythological characters, complete with Venus/Aphrodite, Ares/Mars, Adonis, Pan, and over 40 dancers, (more…)
6 pm to 8:30 pm Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque, in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center and Farm & Table, is hosting a wine tasting seminar at both locations. Helio San Miguel, a Spanish professional from Madrid who works as New York’s correspondent for Club de Gourmets (Spain´s leading wine and food magazine) is the presenter. This event represents our love for gourmet Spanish products and desire to spread the word about them. 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC, is a free evening of food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment. An emphasis is placed on exploring traditional Hispanic dishes, providing basic information/free screenings from (more…)

2 pm to 4 pm Join panelists Amy Córdova, artist and illustrator; and Enrique L. Lamadrid, Gabriel Meléndez, Anna M. Nogar, and Michael Trujillo, from the University of New Mexico for a discussion on Nuevomexicano children’s literature. Recent studies of popular cultural production often center on forms intended for adults. This roundtable will consider a genre designed for children that involves adult interlocutors and mentors. 2 pm both days How Love Wins is a sequel to The Performers Ballet and Jazz Company’s award-winning holiday production of Christmas Joy. Inspired by the Gospel and expressed through dance, the story of How Love Wins is filled with meaningful and engaging choreography.
