10:30 am to 12:00 pm On the first Saturday morning of every month, join us for this fun and engaging artist-led family program. During the March event, families (limited to 25 participants) will get a 30-minute museum tour focused on the NHCC Art Museum’s current exhibit Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage led by artist Rachel Muldez, whose work you will see in the exhibit. La Canoa: Taste, Place and Memory: Toward A Poetics of Chile Eating

2 pm to 4 pm Join Dr. Victor Valle, an Emeritus professor of Ethnic Studies at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, in exploring the life-world of his childhood chile memories to understand a particular family’s idea of chile eating and what it tells us about where and who they were. Dr. Valle’s lecture reveals a critical framework for interpreting the poetics of “taste, place, and memory” and takes its title from the first chapter of his forthcoming book, The Poetics of Fire: Metaphors of Chile-Eating (more…)

Indigenous Comic Con

Friday—2 pm to 9 pm; Saturday—10 am to 9 pm; Sunday—10 am to 6 pm Indigenerds will rejoice as Albuquerque plays host to the first-ever Indigenous Comic Con. From November 18 through November 20, the Duke City will welcome Indigenous artists, creators, and designers from the worlds of comic books, games, sci-fi/fantasy, film, and television to share their art and expertise with a general audience and the Native/Indigenous community. Panquetzaliztli: An Aztec Celebration of the Season

7:30 pm—Saturday 2 pm—Sunday Kalpulli Ehecatl/Ehecatl Aztec Dancers and Friends present Panquetzaliztli, a theatrical performance in three acts. The presentation, an Aztec celebration of the season, draws upon Mesoamerican creation myths and the history behind traditional holiday customs and includes a lyrically performed version of the Panquetzaliztli (Alzamiento de los Estandartes, or Raising of the Banners) celebration, a retelling of the history of Yankwik Tletl (Fuego Nuevo, or the New Fire Ritual, performed during Panquetzaliztli every 52 years), and, as a closing act, the Serpent of Fire Dance. Día de los Muertos: Despedida

5 pm to 7 pm Día de Muertos is an annual traditional holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and many Hispanic communities. Join the NHCC and experienced, knowledgeable local artists to learn about the meaning of this celebration, the traditional arts and crafts associated with the celebration and development of ofrendas that honor families and individuals. The National Hispanic Cultural Center will hold its annual Despedida to celebrate Día de los Muertos with music, poetry and hands-on art making at this time-honored community gathering. Cervantes & Don Quixote Exhibition Opening

2 pm to 5 pm Instituto Cervantes presents an exhibition in four parts, paying homage to Miguel de Cervantes, the famous author of Don Quixote de la Mancha, and commemorating the 400th anniversary of his death. The first part, “Quijotes del celuloide,” displays posters from various movies made about Don Quixote over the years.
