Los Pastores de Belén

3 pm Los Pastores, the New Mexican Shepherds Play, was brought to New Mexico in 17th century from Spain. The play follows the adventures, antics, and battles of shepherds, angels, and devils. On their journey to Bethlehem to take their presents, the shepherds are waylaid by Demonio. The audience is amused by the mischief of Bartolo, the lazy shepherd, and the rhetorical prowess and swordplay of San Miguel. La Cosecha Student Leadership Institute

The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to be a co-sponsor of the 11th Annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI 2019). SLI will take place Friday, November 15, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The institute is part of La Cosecha Dual Language Conference and will bring together over 240 linguistically and culturally diverse students from around the country to focus on issues of identity, leadership, and the development of an asset-based perspective related to their diverse backgrounds. ABQ Zine Fest 9

The National Hispanic Cultural Center partners with ABQ Zine Fest to bring you a day dedicated to zine culture Saturday, Oct. 5. More than 60 exhibitors from 21 cities across the nation will be in New Mexico to sell and trade their zines, comics and small press publications. Now in its ninth year, ABQ Zine Fest continues to bring people and stories to Albuquerque from a diversity of do-it-yourself (DIY) perspectives. Book Presentation and Signing: Dr. Mari-Luci Jaramillo and her book “Sacred Seeds”

2:00 pm A notable educator and civil rights advocate, Mari-Luci Jaramillo is best known for her accomplishments as U.S. Ambassador to Honduras in the 1970s. From humble beginnings in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Mari-Luci went on to a long career that included numerous positions at the University of New Mexico, and serving as the U.S. Department of State, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs under President Carter, and as the U.S. Department of Defense, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Latin America under President Clinton. 6:30 pm Jaima Chevalier’s book Fringe is a tribute to flamenco legend María Benitez and includes almost 200 rare and exclusive images from locally famous to world-renowned photographers, all showcasing Benítez’s central role in dance history. Beníitez is an iconic figure in American flamenco. Her riveting story begins with the complexity of her mixed Native American and Puerto Rican heritage followed by her extraordinary journey as a young woman leaving her home on the outskirts of Taos Pueblo to study flamenco in Spain.
