Film: Todos Santos, La Fiesta de las Almas

7 pm The celebration of Todos Santos in Candelaria, a small farming and weaving community in the southern Andes of Bolivia, is the Yampara culture’s version of Day of the Dead, when the souls of the deceased return to visit their families and partake of the feast celebrated in their honor. Todos Santos serves specific functions to promote well-being within families and communities, reassuring members of their ties to the land and their culture. Film: La Festividad de los Muertos/Lanii Xtee Tugul

7 pm Since pre-Hispanic times, death has played a fundamental role in Zapotec life. The traditional celebration of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, in the Zapotec community of Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico focuses on the importance of family and extended family relations. The celebration includes family-based observances and altars, and continues with a community-wide ritual remembrance in the cemetery. Panquetzaliztli: An Aztec Celebration of the Season

7:30 pm—Saturday 2 pm—Sunday Kalpulli Ehecatl/Ehecatl Aztec Dancers and Friends present Panquetzaliztli, a theatrical performance in three acts. The presentation, an Aztec celebration of the season, draws upon Mesoamerican creation myths and the history behind traditional holiday customs and includes a lyrically performed version of the Panquetzaliztli (Alzamiento de los Estandartes, or Raising of the Banners) celebration, a retelling of the history of Yankwik Tletl (Fuego Nuevo, or the New Fire Ritual, performed during Panquetzaliztli every 52 years), and, as a closing act, the Serpent of Fire Dance. Film: Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi

7 pm This British-American film is based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s 2009 novel of the same name, parodying Jane Austin’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice. Celebrating the Life of Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes

2 pm to 5 pm Join the National Hispanic Cultural Center in celebrating the life of Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes on October 8, 2016, in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre and Cayetana Romero Lobby, both within the NHCC’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts. Dr. Zuniga Forbes was born on June 17, 1938, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and passed on August 28, 2015. The eldest of eight children and mother of two, Dr. Zuniga Forbes was a remarkable woman who cared deeply about her family and community. (more…)
