Make Something!: Visit the Museum….and at home…make something!

Today we are inspired by “A Slice of American Pie,” by artist Luis Eligio Tapia. This piece is part of our permanent collection funded through the Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts, a division fo the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. In 2017, during our family art making summer program, participants were inspired by Luis’ painted Cadillac and created their own designs for artistic cars. Herrera Internship Endowment

The Herrera Internship Endowment was created by Dr. Denise Herrera to honor her parents (Yolanda and Fred Herrera) and grandparents (Reyna and Mariano Herrera), who did not have the opportunity to pursue higher education. As a native New Mexican, Dr. Herrera has dedicated much of her academic and professional career to the advancement of underrepresented groups in higher education. As a participant in several diversity programs herself, Dr. Herrera has mentored students from elementary through postdoctoral levels. Ongoing On the Recuerda César Chávez Committee Facebook page, www.facebook.com/cesarchaveznm The 27th Annual César Chávez Day Fiesta originally scheduled for Saturday, March 28th was postponed, and is now going virtual starting on October 14th. Our César Chávez Day Fiesta has always been a celebration of the life and legacy of César Chávez, featuring a march—La Marcha de Justicia– followed by a family fiesta here at the Center. Colcha Community Stitch-Along

1 pm Live via Zoom Our Colcha Community Workshop is going virtual until we are able to meet in person, and is open to anyone wherever they may reside. This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award winning artist, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. National Latinx Writers Gathering: A Virtual Event for Latinx Writers in All Genres

Friday-Sunday, October 16-18, 2020 www.uslatinxlit.org The first National Latinx Writers Gathering, “Sembrando y Soñando,” will take place October 16-18, 2020. It is open to any Latinx writer working in any genre. As a result of the new coronavirus, all weekend events will be virtual. The first year of this unprecedented convening of Latinx writers emphasizes community-building, connection, and experiential collaboration--determined by a national survey of Latinx writers who expressed what they want from a first conference of this kind. Virtual Lunch with Josefa Gonzalez Mariscal

Register HERE  Josefa Gonzalez Mariscal, the executive director of the NHCC, will share her leadership story in a virtual lunch hosted by the Young Professionals of Albuquerque. In May 2020, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) named Josefa Gonzalez Mariscal the executive director of the NHCC, and she has an incredible leadership story! Día de los Muertos: Lesson Plans

Día de los Muertos is observed on November 1st and 2nd in many countries across Latin American. The celebration is the result of a blending of Catholic Spanish traditions with Indigenous customs and beliefs. It is believed that on Día de los Muertos the veil between the spirit world and real world is lifted long enough for the souls of the deceased to reunite with their families and friends. The National Hispanic Cultural Center remains closed, and since we can't invite you to the NHCC to celebrate Día de los Muertos, we invite you to share the names of your loved ones in the comments on our social media to create a digital remembrance.
