  • Carnaval 2016: “Ticket to Paradise”

    7:30 pm Frank and Pilar Leto and the NHCC continue their annual celebration of Carnaval with a festive and colorful evening of music, dance, and theatre featuring the Odara Dance Ensemble and the musical group PANdemonium. Carnaval 2016: “Ticket to Paradise” transports the audience to exotic Carnaval destinations. You are invited to join the party at our first stop in Rio de Janeiro, then on to Trinidad, Cuba, and our final destination, New Orleans.   • Jesús Muñoz Flamenco, Live!

    8 pm, both evenings Jesús Muñoz Flamenco presents the company’s new production, Live!, showcasing the artistry of 12 internationally renowned dancers and musicians from Spain to Latin America. Participating performers have composed for platinum flamenco albums, prestigious dance companies, and popular artists such as José Merce, El Barrio, Marc Anthony, and Andrea Bocelli.     Due to personal reasons and circumstances beyond the NHCC’s, Avokado Artists’ and the artist's control, the Ceci Bastida show originally scheduled for March 5th at the National Hispanic Cultural Center has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2016.   • Chispa: Orchestra of New Spain, Iphigenia en Tracia, A Zarzuela

    3 pm Iphigenia en Tracia, based on Euripedes’ Iphigenia in Tauris, was written in 1747 by José de Nebra, known as the leading late-Baroque composer of Spanish opera and zarzuela, with libretto by Nicolás González Martínez. Nebra’s ultimate, highly dramatic zarzuela is a tragicomic version of the legendary story, set near the ancient city of Troy and presented with all the panoply, splendor, dance, and humor it would have enjoyed when it opened in Madrid's newly rebuilt Corral de la Cruz.     7:30 pm Born in Tijuana, Baja California to parents who were both pianists, acoustic folk-pop singer/songwriter Vanessa Zamora became interested in the performing arts as a child. She began piano lessons at the age of eight, and continued a year later with guitar and drums. While a student at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, she began uploading videos covering favorite songs by various artists on YouTube and social networking sites.     7:30 pm A star in contemporary world music, jazz, flamenco, and fusion, Buika is one of the most sought-after performers on the world stage today.  Born to African parents in Mallorca, Spain, she is often compared to Nina Simone, Chavela Vargas, and Cesaria Evora.  Her recordings have received multiple awards, including several Latin Grammys, and her 2013 release, La noche más larga, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.   • 23rd Annual César Chávez Day

    10:30 am - Marcha 12 pm – Fiesta Join the 23rd annual César Chávez Day celebration, with a march beginning at 10:30 am and ending at noon at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor.  Following the march, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry, dancing, community awards and exhibits, children’s activities, food, a keynote speech by Carlos Marentes, and live music by Las Cafeteras.
