10:00 am As part of the NHCC's El Arte de la Palabra series, award-winning author Alicia Gaspar de Alba will host a writing workshop, titled The Mariposa Hour: Oral Storytelling. This oral storytelling workshop is based on techniques from The Moth, which Gaspar de Alba teaches in her bilingual creative writing class, The Mariposa Hour. Colcha Community Stitch A-long

9:30 am on the 4th Tuesday of each month Our Colcha community Workshop is open to all levels of experience in an informal setting. This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award-winning artist, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. 7:30 pm Join us on April 19 for a panel discussion by renowned chefs! For Afro diasporas, food remains one of the most effective means of resistance, of cultural retention, and innovation. The foods of Afro peoples continue to incorporate ingredients of ancestral dishes and to preserve African ways of preparing ingredients native to the Americas. Presenters will discuss the African roots of various dishes and defy stereotypes of what “soul” food is. New Mexico Folk Dance for Seniors

1:30 to 3:30 pm New Mexico Folk Dance will feature 4 weeks of traditional New Mexico music with dance classes such as La Marcha. Classes run for four consecutive Thursdays from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. New Mexico Folk Dance is part of the NHCC’s Siempre Creativo program, which provides a free multidisciplinary arts program for seniors. Free Community Event, generously supported by AARP New Mexico.
