The National Hispanic Cultural Center is taking on a project, supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, with the goal of giving value and meaning to the lived stories of our New Mexico community; bringing heightened awareness of racial divides and inequalities; and helping navigate ways to heal and move forward together through art. Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 through October 15 and the NHCC has plenty of ways to celebrate. First, with the help of Google Arts and Culture, you can now explore select items from the NHCC Art Museum permanent collection online. You also can see the Mundos de Mestizaje, a 4,000-square-foot painting that is the largest concave fresco in North America, in incredible detail. 6 pm This all-ages free event includes an art show/spoken word, salsa dancing lessons, then dancing, and free food along with HIV education and testing. NLAAD is a national community mobilization and social marketing campaign that unites the Hispanic/Latino community in efforts to raise HIV awareness, promotion of HIV testing, prevention, and education; in addition to other critical health issues such as viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and tuberculosis (TB). 10:30 am Women in early eighteenth century Spanish Colonial New Mexico had rights and privileges that were not enjoyed by other women in North America until the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  Under Spanish law women were considered separate entities and valuable members of Spanish society.  As such, they could own property, inherit in their own name, and act as court witnesses.  In particular they could make accusations and denunciations to the local alcalde mayor and governor, which they frequently did.  The thirty-one documents in Spanish Colonial (more...)
