  • Camina el Autor: The Iconography of Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala, Peruvian/Quechuan Chronicler

    History and Literary Arts Building

    Camina el Autor showcases the extraordinary work of Guaman Poma; explores the history of the indigenous people of Peru, Andean civilization, and Spanish conquest; and broadens our understanding of Peruvian culture and history.The digital images and accompanying texts have been provided to the NHCC by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with assistance from the Consulate General of Peru in Denver. The NHCC has curated these (398 fullpage drawings) to present a vibrant and informative exhibit that encourages learning, discovery, and contemplation.   • ALMA: Mosaics From the Soul

    The ALMA Summer Institute (formally Mayor's Art Institute) was created in 1999 to provide paid training and mentorship for artistically talented youth and adults through its apprenticeship model. The apprentices work with Lead Artists to create handmade tile mosaics, helping with every aspect of making a public artwork. In 8-10 weeks, they assist with design, carve tiles from wet clay, glaze tiles, fire a kiln, cement tiles to the wall, and grout the finished artwork.   • First Friday: Volunteer Education and Conversation

    9 am – 11 am On the first Friday of each month, NHCC docents and core volunteers meet for coffee and conversation along with monthly presentations on topics that build the knowledge and skills of the docent core to give tours, educate the NHCC visitors and share the NHCC mission and programs.   • Día de los Muertos: Despedida

    5 pm - 7 pm Free Community Event The National Hispanic Cultural Center will hold its annual Despedida (Farewell) to celebrate Día de los Muertos with music, poetry, and hands-on art at this time-honored community gathering. This is a great event for all ages. Tour the ofrendas around the NHCC campus and enjoy music, poetry, traditional hot chocolate mexicano, pan de muerto, and the sharing of heartfelt memories.     11:30 am - 2 pm Free Family Fun Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC is a free event with food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.
