    10:30 am On May 5 join Robert Martinez, the Deputy State Historian of New Mexico, for his presentation "More Mexico City Roots: Digging for Ancestors in Mexican Records." Hewill look at research into the Rivera, Leyva y Mendoza, and other families that came to settle in New Mexico in the 1700s.  Mr. Martinez is the coauthor of the four part series “Mexico City Roots: Jiron de Tejeda, Leyva y Mendoza and Afan de Ribera Families” which was published in the HGRC Herencia.

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.     2 pm The NHCC and Haverland Carter Lifestyle Group present Una Celebración de México, paying tribute to the beautiful song and dance of Mexico with award-winning, internationally renowned mariachi recording artist Antonio Reyna and a cast of talented musicians and performers.   • Opera in the Museum

    6 pm Enjoy a sampling of music from the sold-out opera based on Rudolfo Anaya’s beloved novel Bless Me, Ultima, surrounded by the artwork from the exhibit La Ultima Exhibición. This brand new opera, performed at the NHCC in February of this year, was commissioned by Opera Southwest, the NHCC, and San José-based Opera Cultura. The composer, Hector Armienta, worked with Mr. Anaya on the libretto. $20 (limited to 50)

  • ¡Baile! Rueda de Casino (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class

    6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate - This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. 7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced - In order to participate in this class, dancers must know how to keep time, closed position calls, dame, enchufla, and outside turn.
