    During Cervantes Week, we will commemorate one of the most universally acclaimed figures of Spanish language and culture, Miguel de Cervantes. This event is organized by Instituto Cervantes-Albuquerque in collaboration with the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the Spanish Resource Center, and the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque.   • Making Art: Earth Day: Recycled Art & Bosque Walk

  • ¡Salud y Sabor!: Nuevo México

    5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC, is a free evening of food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment.     7 pm Beloved Mexican comic Cantinflas (Mario Moreno) portrays a young lawyer who dedicates himself to resolving the problems of the less fortunate. The title is a play on words deriving from his old professor’s description of him as “un hombre puro, y sin mancha” (a pure man, without stain)—qualities he is perceived to share with Cervantes’ Don Quixote de la Mancha (referring, in this case, to the region of Spain in which Don Quixote lives).   • Opening Reception: Outstanding in His Field: San Ysidro—Patron Saint of Farmers

    6 pm to 8 pm Each spring, New Mexico communities celebrate San Ysidro (aka San Isidro or Saint Isidore) the patron saint of farmers, gardeners, and workers. San Ysidro blesses the fields, brings rain and discourages drought, and assures a healthy growing season for local crops such as chile, beans, corn and squash. The exhibition highlights contemporary and traditional depictions of this adored saint through approximately 65 art works by artists of all ages.     2 pm to 4 pm Join Rebecca Blum Martinez, professor of bilingual and ESL education in the College of Education at the University of New Mexico, for a talk on the history and present state of bilingual education in New Mexico. Blum Martinez has worked with and advocated for bilingual students and their families in New Mexico since 1975. Bilingual education has been a contentious educational reform since its inception in the late 1960s. New Mexico, in 1969, was one of the first states to embrace Spanish/English (more...)
