    2 pm & 7 pm New Year’s with the Opera is a fun variety show featuring Opera Southwest’s most beloved performers, the Albuquerque Youth Symphony, and the Opera Southwest Chamber Orchestra. With a variety of opera favorites and light classics, there is something for everyone to ring in the New Year.   • Travel the Hispanic World this New Year’s Eve!

    History and Literary Arts Building

    Noon - 2 pm Celebrate New Year’s Eve at the National Hispanic Cultural Center by touring 12 stations with interactive activities. Each station celebrates New Year’s Eve with a different tradition from a different country. In Brazil, eat seven raisins. In Mexico, pocket a handful of lentils. In Spain, eat 12 grapes and make 12 wishes. Tear up your 2019 calendars in Uruguay. In Colombia, create a little suitcase to celebrate adventures to come–and so much more! No experience is necessary to participate in this class. 7:15 pm to 8:15 pm—Advanced Class In order to participate in this class, dancers must come to at least one 6 pm class and be familiar with the vocabulary and movement introduced in these classes.     2 pm - 4 pm In celebration of the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial, please join Dr. Anna Nogar as she explores the many facets of Nina Otero Warren. Early 20th century nuevomexicana Adelina “Nina” Otero-Warren ran for national office as a Republican candidate to Congress from New Mexico in 1922, shortly after women gained the right to vote. An advocate of suffrage, Otero-Warren achieved political prominence for her promotion of Spanish/English education, and involvement in educational and health efforts supporting Indo-Hispano nuevomexicanos.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. The digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a (more...)
