  • Film: ¡COLORES! The Musical Adventures of John Donald Robb in New Mexico

    7 pm The late John Donald Robb loved and composed all kinds of music, but his passion for the songs of everyday folk is what he is remembered for most. Roaming the countryside of the Southwest during the 40s and 50s, Robb recorded and transcribed over 3,000 Hispano folk songs, the largest collection of its time. This documentary celebrates the life of this adventurous musician and the modern day ethnomusicologists who continue to record and archive New Mexico's disappearing folk music traditions. SLI will take place Friday, November 15, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.     5:30 pm - 7:30 pm Diwali is one of the biggest Hindu festivals, celebrated in India with great enthusiasm and happiness for five continuous days. The third day is celebrated as the main Diwali festival, or “Festival of Lights,” and different varieties of colorful fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day, people light diyas (lamps) and candles all around their houses. They perform Laxmi Puja in the evening and seek divine blessings from the Goddess of Wealth.   • There Must Be Other Names for the River

    7 pm (doors open at 6 pm) 516 ARTS, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and UNM Art & Ecology Program artists Marisa Demarco, Dylan McLaughlin, and Jessica Zeglin present There Must Be Other Names for the River. This composition for six singers is based on streamflow data from the river known today as the Rio Grande. Each singer channels the river, representing a point where flows were observed and recorded.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.     2 pm Norma Elia Cantú will read from her new novel, Cabañuelas (University of New Mexico Press, 2019), the successor to her award-winning Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera, which chronicles her childhood experiences on the border. Nena leaves Laredo, Texas, and moves to Madrid, Spain, to research the historical roots of traditional fiestas in Laredo. Immersing herself in post-Franco Spain and its rich history, its food, music, and fiestas, Nena finds herself falling for Paco, a Spaniard.
