    Education Building - Classroom 122/124 10 am to 5 pm Cultural responsive teaching encourages educators to allow students to enter the classroom as their authentic selves. Rather than forcing students to code-switch, they are asked about where they come from and to relate that to the course material.   • Art Making: Try this at home!

    In April 2019, we made lemonade out of lemons in the Art Museum. Not real lemonade, because food and drink aren’t allowed in the Museum! We were expecting construction, and to keep the art safe, it had to be put in storage. We took the families participating in our Saturday program, Vamos al Museo into the Museum to look at blank walls.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. The digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a (more...)

  • ¡Baile! Rueda de Casino (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class

    6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. 7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced – In order to participate in this class, dancers must know how to keep time, closed position calls, dame, enchufla, and outside turn. Each culminates with a reading of new work created by local authors.     6 pm Bareleños completing a 5-week series of writing workshops share their stories about the neighborhood. Workshops were led by Barelas residents/playwrights Leonard Madrid, Raúl Garza and Mónica Sánchez. These stories and others will inspire a trilogy of plays by Madrid, Garza and Sánchez. Join us to remember the past and imagine the future of one of Albuquerque's oldest neighborhoods.  Presented by the NHCC in partnership with Artful Life and Homewise/B. Ruppe.   • La Canoa: Valerie Rangel “Environmental Policies, Planning, and Cultural Connections of Nuevo México”

    2 pm Please join Valerie Rangel, community planner and environmental planning consultant, as she shares historical research, land use planning, and policy frameworks that shed light on issues of environmental contamination and public health while uplifting the voices of immigrant farm workers, tribal members, environmental and social activists from the communities of Nuevo México.
