  • Braceros Exhibit Opening Reception

    History and Literary Arts Building

    6 pm This exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term, primarily agricultural labor contracts.   • Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications

    Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing, creating art, writing, learning from guest artists, writing,  sharing, writing, collaborating, writing, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. The program runs each weekend day in June from 9:30 am- 4 pm with a free lunch included.   • La Canoa: Outside the Recipes: the Sustenance of Story

    2 pm Querencia as defined by Nuevomexicano scholar Juan Estevan Arellano is "love of place.”  Please join Dr. Patricia Perea as she presents a talk on the articulation of querencia to speak directly with the writings and experiences discussed in this lecture.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.   • ¡Baile! Rueda de Casino (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class

    6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. 7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced – In order to participate in this class, dancers must know how to keep time, closed position calls, dame, enchufla, and outside turn.   • Writing Workshop: Fiction (All Genres)

    6 pm, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) The NHCC is committed to cultivating local writers and celebrating their work. In this workshop, writers read excerpts from books by Latinx authors, engage in a variety of writing exercises that build skills and generate new writing,. Each class gives a public reading as a culminating event. Instructor:  Brenna Gomez (UNM). Deadline to register: Monday, January 14 2019. Workshop Fee: $250 (about $30 per class).     5:30-7 pm NHCC Library, History and Literary Arts Building Opera novices and aficionados are invited to three free interactive presentations about  "María de Buenos Aires," Astor Piazzolla’s extraordinary tango-opera. Over three Wednesday evenings, poet Valerie Martínez and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead you on a magical journey through the story, the libretto, the music, and the staging of this evocative work, which tells the story of María, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires, who sleepwalks through life, death, the afterlife, and is reborn into “innocence.” The music, by tango legend (more...)
