    10:30 am This month, Robert Martinez will present “Mulatos of Cochiti: Caste in Spanish New Mexico.”  In this presentation, former Deputy State Historian and now newly appointed State Historian Robert Martinez examines the role of racial mixing, identity, and the categorizing of humans living in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. The approach will be through the lens of the casta, or caste system.     12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. The digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a (more...)

No experience is necessary to participate in this class. 7:15 pm to 8:15 pm—Advanced Class In order to participate in this class, dancers must come to at least one 6 pm class and be familiar with the vocabulary and movement introduced in these classes. International Cinema Series, presented in partnership with ¡Globalquerque!, New Mexico’s Fifteenth Celebration of World Music and Culture, returning to the NHCC on September 20 & 21. Most films in the series are from countries whose artists are represented in this year’s festival.     Call for Entries! Día de los Muertos Community Ofrenda Exhibit 2019 Each year the National Hispanic Cultural Center works with schools and community organizations to host an exhibit of ofrendas (altars) in celebration of Día de los Muertos Ofrendas will be placed in the Domenici Education Building and the Roy E. Disney Performing Arts Center. Due to limited availability, the NHCC cannot accommodate all requests for tables.
