  • Salud y Sabor: Día de los Muertos: Mexico

    5:30 pm -- 7:30 pm Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC, is a free evening of food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment.     7 pm Since pre-Hispanic times, death has played a fundamental role in Zapotec life. The traditional celebration of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, in the Zapotec community of Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico focuses on the importance of family and extended family relations. The celebration includes family-based observances and altars, and continues with a community-wide ritual remembrance in the cemetery. Presented in partnership with Metamorfosis Documentation Project, a non-profit organization documenting and supporting cross-cultural rituals and dances in the Americas through collaborative projects (more...)

This will be the New Mexico premiere of Rossini’s little-known masterwork. Walking into his art space is almost like entering a larger-than-life version of one of his sculptures as twisting shapes and materials sprawl across the floor and wall space. Abdalla is a former professor of art studio at the University of New Mexico and his work is featured in the NHCC Art Museum exhibition, "Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldy Collage".
