    8 pm In their third performance at the NHCC, the New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra (NMJLO) will again present a two-part show featuring an opening set of straight-up Latin jazz and a second set fusing folkloric rhythms with jazz elements. This year’s performance also will feature internationally renowned musician Frankie Vazquez, along with César Bauvallet, Doug Lawrence, Bobby Shew, Jackie Zamora and special guest Mike Williams, formerly the lead trumpeter with the legendary, 18-time Grammy®-winning Count Basie Orchestra and one of the most powerful high-note trumpet players ever.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.     6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. 7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced – In order to participate in this class, dancers must know how to keep time, closed position calls, dame, enchufla, and outside turn.     5:30-7 pm NHCC Library, History and Literary Arts Building Opera novices and aficionados are invited to three free interactive presentations about  "María de Buenos Aires," Astor Piazzola’s extraordinary tango-opera. Over three Wednesday evenings, poet Valerie Martínez and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead you on a magical journey through the story, the libretto, the music, and the staging of this evocative work, which tells the story of María, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires, who sleepwalks through life, death, the afterlife, and is reborn into “innocence.” The music, by tango legend (more...)

  • Writing Workshop: Fiction (All Genres)

    6 pm, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) The NHCC is committed to cultivating local writers and celebrating their work. In this workshop, writers read excerpts from books by Latinx authors, engage in a variety of writing exercises that build skills and generate new writing,. Each class gives a public reading as a culminating event. Instructor:  Brenna Gomez (UNM). Deadline to register: Monday, January 14, 2019. Workshop Fee: $250 (about $30 per class).     5:30 pm The NHCC Book Club meets once a month to talk about that month's selected book. In January, the book will be Pat Mora's House of Houses (memoir). Pat Mora also will be the keynote speaker/reader at the NHCC Children's Bilingual Book Festival on April 27, 2019. To join the NHCC Book Club, register here.   • Braceros Exhibit Opening Reception

    6 pm This exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term, primarily agricultural labor contracts.   • Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications

    Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing, creating art, writing, learning from guest artists, writing,  sharing, writing, collaborating, writing, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. The program runs each weekend day in June from 9:30 am- 4 pm with a free lunch included.
